Are people capable of predicting events before they happen? Foreboding without warning signals does exist, according to new research.

Scientists at Northwestern University analyzed the results of 26 studies published from 1978 to 2010. Study participants experienced significant changes in heart and brain waves, as well as fluctuations in electrical measurements of the skin, up to 10 seconds before experiencing various random stimuli, such as exciting photography. This suggests that people somehow anticipated that they would see something that causes a certain reaction in them.

While our subconscious is known to know more than our conscious mind, it was unclear if humans could predict important future events even if there was no outside clue.

For example, a person playing video games with headphones at work cannot hear if their boss comes in.

“But the data analysis suggests that if you listened to your body, you would notice the warning changes 2-10 seconds before the event and close the video game,” explained Julia Mossbridge, author of the study. "You could even open a working paper ahead of time before the boss walks into the office."

Scientists are not sure if this phenomenon can be called "the ability to foresee the future." They called this phenomenon "abnormal warning activity." Abnormal because scientists cannot explain it using knowledge of biology. Warning, because it predicts future physiological changes in response to an important event without any signs, and activity, as it represents changes in the cardiopulmonary, cutaneous and nervous systems.
