Kukulkan (Gukumatz) - "winged serpent", in Mayan mythology - one of the main deities. Kukulkan is the god of the four Holy Gifts - fire, earth, air and water; and each element was associated with a divine animal or plant: Air - Eagle, Earth - Corn, Fire - Lizard, Water - Fish. In Mayan manuscripts and sculpture, Kukulkan is represented by at least six symbolic images. This is mainly the image of a serpent. He was also depicted as an eagle, jaguar, blood, snail shell, and finally as a flute made of bones.
Kukulkan represents good and evil forces similar to the -yang paradigm of the Eastern religions. By the time of the Spanish conquest (XVI century), legends about a historical person - the leader of the Toltecs (who invaded Yucatan in the X century), who considered himself an impersonator of Kukulkan (Quetzalcoatl), and Toltec ideas about this deity, as well as the more ancient Mayan beliefs in associated with the cult of rain cloud serpents.
As a result of syncretic processes, Kukulkan was revered by the late Maya as the god of wind, the giver of rains, the god of the planet Venus, the founder of several royal dynasties and large cities. Kukulkan was depicted as a serpent with a human head. According to some Mayan myths, the world was created by a pair of gods - Kukulkan and Hurokan. Khurokan is the god of the natural principle and all violent natural forces. He - "the heart of the mountains" - the god of the earth's interior, caves, earthquakes, volcanoes; god of fire, but at the same time, cold, north, ice; he is the god of darkness, the night starry sky; he is the god of valor, in order to test the courage of young warriors, he called them at night to battle in the guise of a jaguar.
Kukulkan was considered a benevolent deity. He taught people agriculture, fishing, various sciences, gave them a calendar, writing, invented ceremonies and a code of laws. In the history of the Maya, the cult of Kukulkan was transformed into a kind of cult of nobility, Indians, chosen only from the noble class, were sacrificed to him, and all this was furnished with the highest degree of solemnity. Such an abundance of functions, roles and meanings of the image of Kukulkan can be explained by the antiquity of the cult of his veneration.
