Let us analyze excerpts from the book of M. N. Tikhomirov "List of Russian cities far and near" OCR by M. N. Tikhomirov. Russian chronicle writing. M., "Science", 1979, pp. 83 - 137, 357 - 361.
It contains a list of cities and the following comment from the creator:
The most mysterious is the city of Tmutarakan, shown between Miroslavitsy and Ostrechsky city on the Desna, that is, on the left bank of the Dnieper. There is no reason to think that the compiler of the "List" inserted here the name of the ancient Tmutarakan, located on the shores of the Kerch Strait. There could have been a small Kiev town with the same name, as indicated by the existence of the city of Korsun on the Ros, bearing the same name as Korsun or Chersonesos in the Crimea. Let's note right there that the village of Torokan existed, for example, in the 19th century. in the Kobrin district of the Grodno province.

As Tikhomirov described in the book, Tmutarakan was located between Miroslavitsy and Ostrechesky grad on the Desna.

In these chronicles, Tmutarakan is not only mentioned, but also actively participates in the public life of the Russian principalities, especially the Kiev one:
From here it is clear that this is the same city that was indicated in the list.
A little higher than Kiev, there was a tributary on the left side of the Dnieper - the Desna, it was, and withered, with whom it does not happen (our Sea of Azov has dried up). Only one name remained from the entire inflow. There were different options for where to shove it, and the version of Musin-Pushkin won.

In particular, this passage refers to the Tmutarakan blockhead, that is, an idol. As if according to the official history at that time, in principle, it could not be there. But judging by my research, everything is fine. This is the idol of one of the Slavic gods who were part of the pantheon of the ancient Jewish faith, which was in the region of Russia before Christianity.
In the next passage, where Tmutarokan is mentioned, the bells are ringing in two neighboring cities: Tmutarokan and Chernigov.
