The first mention of the island
It was first mentioned in documents from the 5th century, when Italy was attacked by barbarians, and the locals had to hide from them on the island.
In 1379, the inhabitants of the island were moved closer to Venice to protect them from the Genoese fleet. Since then, people have not lived on the island.
How the island became a quarantine site
In 1777, the island was transferred to the Public Health Administration. From that moment on, they began to bring all patients with the bubonic plague there, who were later buried or burned here.
Almost 200 thousand people died here from the plague.

After 37 years, the hospital was closed.
From quarantine to a place where experiments are performed
A hundred years later, the abandoned building was repaired and a psychiatric hospital was opened in it, where people with very serious illnesses were brought.
Due to the distance from people, doctors began to experiment on patients, beat them and perform lobotomies.
Later, the head physician of this hospital went mad and committed suicide.
What's happening to the island now
Since 1968, it has remained empty, but with a terrible history behind it. Now almost no one is eager to visit this island, but sometimes there are thrill-seekers.
The Italian government decided to hold an auction and lease the island for 99 years. It is assumed that the hospital building will be converted into a hotel.
But how many will be willing?
