The British Academy of Motion Picture and Television Arts will begin screening BAFTA Games Awards nominated games for representativeness. The organizers of the award announced this on the official website.

In 2021, the criterion of representativeness will be applied to entries in the Best UK Game category as a test. Nominees will have to achieve the desired performance in four categories:

A - in-game representativity, themes and storytelling;

B - creative leadership and development team;

С - availability of industry and opportunities;

D - player base development.

All criteria can be found in a special document. For example, to achieve a standard in Category A, a game must meet at least three of the following criteria:

  • A1 - at least one of the main characters must belong to minorities. For games without a plot, the roster of playable characters must meet at least one of the following requirements: 50/50 gender balance of heroes, 20% of minority characters, 10% of LGBTQ + characters, 7% of deaf and disabled people, a significant part of characters from different regions, significant some of the characters from the low-income category of the population.
  • A2 - minor and non-playable characters must meet at least one of the following requirements: 50/50 gender balance of heroes, 20% of minority characters, 10% of LGBTQ + characters, 7% of deaf and disabled people, a significant part of characters from different regions, a significant part characters from a low-income category of the population. In games with a storyline, their role in the story should be stated.
  • A3 - The main storyline or narrative theme should be about minorities. The game should be representative for most of the playing time, not just at one point.
  • A4 - Subplots, other topics covered, or character backstories should be about minorities.
  • A5 - the events of the game must take place in a region or community that is poorly represented in popular culture. In the case of fictional locations, developers will have to explain their connection to the real world.
  • A6 - When casting actors, developers must challenge stereotypes and pay attention to minorities. Games with crowds of NPCs should have a fair amount of minority members.
