To date, the shepherd dogs Tom and Jack are the only clones in Russia, both among dogs and living creatures in general.

Unusual dogs entered service in the canine department of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). Two males named Jack and Tom were born in a very non-standard way, but already known to the scientific community and the general public.

In 2015, as a result of a scientific experiment of the South Korean institute "Sooam biotech research foundation" conducted by Professor Hwang Woo Sok, representatives of the long-standing shepherd breed of the Belgian Malinois were bred by cloning. Today they are the only clones in Russia, both among dogs and living beings in general.

A year later, the shepherd dogs from the Seoul laboratory were brought to Yakutia, and in early November of this year they were transferred to the Federal Penitentiary Service.

The idea to present such unusual quadrupeds to the penitentiary department belongs to their owner - the chairman of the regional branch of the Russian military-historical society Valery Chugunov, as a sign of long-term and fruitful cooperation between the regional penal system and a public organization, the press service of the UFSIN told us.

During the working meeting, the head of the Federal Penitentiary Service Vladislav Dziuba expressed gratitude to Valery Chugunov for the gift and assured that all the necessary conditions will be created for the new pets and proper care will be provided.

“I have been familiar with this breed of dogs for a long time and I know the qualities inherent in them. When I got these puppies, I, without hesitation, offered them to our law enforcement officers. Firstly, this type of shepherd dog is intended for police work in the USA, Canada and a number of European countries. Secondly, to reproduce Tom and Jack, biomaterial was taken from the best representatives of this breed. So they ended up serving in correctional colony No. 1, commented Valery Chugunov.

It was expected that the representatives of the short-haired breed did not immediately adapt to the conditions of the Far North. However, after three weeks of being in the nursery IK-1 and training under the guidance of experienced specialists, the results exceeded all expectations.

Already today, shepherd dogs can demonstrate the ability to overcome the obstacles of the cinema, the skills of detecting objects and people by smell, take the trail of a conditional offender, and most importantly, they show the ability to quickly adapt to new environmental conditions.

“These shepherd dogs are easy to train, flexible mind and gentle nature. Also among their properties is the fact that they can work regardless of external stimuli and weather conditions. But given the fact that for the first time in their lives they found themselves in extremely low temperatures and, being already two years old, saw snow, we did not demand much from them. We realized that dogs were still in shock and that patience and time were needed. However, day by day, lesson after lesson, they showed more and more signs of adaptation and socialization, they began to cope well with the tasks of the general and special training course, ” said Irina Babikova, senior instructor of the canine group of IK-1.

Before being transported from South Korea to Russia, the Shepherd Dogs underwent a full course of examination. Upon arrival in Yakutia, they were placed in quarantine for three months with the passage of the necessary procedures, and were accepted for allowance in the penal system on the basis of the conclusion of the expert commission on the suitability to serve in law enforcement agencies.
