In 1976, in the summer, a Soviet scientific vessel called "Vladimir Komarov" sailed across the vastness of the Arabian Sea. Shortly before midnight, when all the crew members who were not on duty were asleep, the ship's captain Petrenko was summoned to the captain's bridge. There stood the navigator of the watch and shouted something, pointing to the water.

A circular object with a radius of 150-200 m revolved directly around the ship. The circle moved counterclockwise around the center, from which long rays emanated. The echo sounder recorded a depth of 170 m. The water temperature was +26 degrees. After 30 minutes, the glowing circle disappeared and never reappeared.

But this was not the first meeting of sailors with this amazing natural phenomenon, which occurs exclusively in the waters of the Indian Ocean: it has long been known to scientists. The crew of the Vulgar ship from England first met him in 1879. On July 10, at 22 o'clock, near the Indian subcontinent, the sailors saw two luminous circles with rays emanating from the center from the left and right sides. One of the objects rotated counterclockwise and the other in the opposite direction. Captain Evans was able to record the speed of their rotation. She was 130 km / h.

Although Evans was a very famous and respected scientist, a member of the Geographical Society of Britain, no one took his message seriously. The following year, 1880, sailors of the Shahkikin ships from England when crossing the eastern part of the Indian Ocean again witnessed this strange phenomenon. Captain Harris steered the ship straight to the very center of the circle.

In the same year, the British sailors of the Patna ship in the Persian Gulf saw two glowing circles on their way. They rotated at 160 km / h in opposite directions.

Since then, reports of encounters with mysterious luminous objects in the Indian Ocean began to pour in one after another. By 1973, when the Soviet crew of the Anton Makarenko spacecraft saw these circles, more than 60 such observations had already been collected.

Mystery circles have been found to behave in different ways. Usually, one or two luminous circles appeared on the surface of the ocean. Each of them emitted rays several hundred meters long. Sometimes the circles shone in such a way that one could even read.

After a while, the strange circles disappeared. The nature of such phenomena has not yet been explained. According to some scientists, this is the result of a huge concentration of plankton in the waters, which, under certain conditions, floats to the surface and forms glowing spots on it. How to explain their regular shape and rays coming from the center, as well as their high rotation speed? For more than a hundred years, scientists have not been able to solve this riddle.
