Highway 666 (US 666) is an infamous north-south road in the Four Corners region. It appeared in 1926 as the 6th branch of the famous route number 66 and almost immediately began to convince people of its devilish origin.
The Devil's Highway was notable for its high mortality rate and extremely ridiculous accidents. Drivers said that this path was cursed and advised to go around it. There were many creepy stories about Route 666 that were hard to believe. At first, the stories of evil spirits seemed like just urban legends, but people continued to die.
The police received many complaints about strange glowing balls, faceless fellow travelers, taking away souls, possessed dogs that hunted travelers in the twilight, and even about a ghostly killer driver who appeared out of nowhere and rammed cars of unsuspecting victims. The reports were repeatedly supported by the testimony of terrified and wounded eyewitnesses, who only miraculously managed to survive.
Despite the testimony of the victims, the bikes would have remained bikes, but the abnormally high statistics of deaths in this area forced the society to change its view of what was happening. In 2003, the sinister route number was changed to "491". Immediately after that, the devilry stopped and the road was gradually forgotten. But even now, on some sections of the route, you can find outdated road signs with three sixes. There is a belief that evil still dwells around them.
The mystical path runs through the states of Colorado, New Mexico and Utah, as well as through the territories of the Navajo and Utah Indians. The road crosses two mountains considered sacred by the indigenous people: Mount Utah and the extinct Shiprok Volcano.
Highway 666 has left its mark not only in numerous comics, but also in the film industry. So in 2001 the film company Lions Gate Home Entertainment released the film "Route 66". And in the 13th episode of the 1st season of the TV series "Supernatural", the main character found himself on a gloomy highway marked by the "number of the beast."
