Scientists have discovered in North Ossetia and Ingushetia the world's smallest mammal, the pygmy white-toothed white-toothed white-toothed shrine, said Valery Stakheev, Ph. D.

Previously, there was no confirmed data that this species occurs on the territory of Russia.

“We have obtained reliable data that the pygmy white-toothed white-toothed white-toothed bird has begun to be found periodically on the territory of North Ossetia and Ingushetia, as our colleagues report. Now we can say that she has become a sedentary species with us,”Stakheev said.

In his opinion, the shrew could get to the south of Russia from the Transcaucasus. Scientists will observe the species and its further dispersal.

“With the emergence of a new species, restructuring of ecological ties can occur, since all niches in nature are occupied, and when a new species comes to someone’s niche, then relationships must be built between them. This also requires monitoring,”the agency's interlocutor explained.

Stakheev added that data on the pygmy white-toothed shrew will be entered into the data portal "Mammals of Russia", work on which began this year and will last until 2024.

The pygmy shrew belongs to the family of shrews. Her body length ranges from 3 to 4.5 centimeters, weight does not exceed 1.7 grams. The animal has 30 teeth. According to scientists, they benefit forestry and agriculture by destroying insect pests.
