Any military conflicts, whenever and wherever they occur, after their end, leave a lot of mysteries. Extreme conditions of survival require extreme efforts, and this gives rise to actions that are unusual or even impossible in a peaceful life. Probably not a single war left as many mysteries as the Second World War. Many secrets still excite the minds of researchers.
One of these mysteries is related to Nazi bases in Antarctica.
Immediately after the end of the war, rumors began to circulate in the west about the unsuccessful expedition of American Admiral Richard Byrd. Allegedly, he was supposed to find and destroy the secret underground base of the Nazis.
To carry out this mission, 4 thousand people, 13 ships with an aircraft carrier and 25 aircraft were sent. The campaign went on without incident, but in the spring of 1948 the expedition was hastily curtailed and the squadron turned back.
It turned out that not everyone returned home.
Immediately after the return of the squadron, information about the entries in the admiral's diary was leaked to the media. It said that the squadron faced powerful resistance from an unknown military force. So ships and aircraft were attacked by unknown disc-shaped aircraft. The speed and maneuverability of the vehicles was simply unheard of. After a short attack, the admiral's fleet lost one ship, four aircraft and several dozen sailors killed.
There are many documents about the serious interest of the Nazis in the southern continent. Thus, Karl Dönitz's statement is well known: “My divers have discovered a real earthly paradise. The German submarine fleet is proud to have created an impregnable fortress for the Fuhrer on the other side of the world."
Some historians argue that there is evidence of the Nazis' discovery of a huge network of underground cavities with a moderately warm climate. Some captive submariners recounted how they accompanied or participated in convoys that transported heavy equipment, engineers and scientists with their families to Antarctica.
