Easter Island is a unique territory in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, which is one of the most remote inhabited islands in the world, located 3703 km from the coast of South America.
The island is the highest point (539 meters above sea level) of a massive seamount called the East Pacific Rise. According to British writer and journalist Graham Hancock in The Mirror of Heaven, 12,000 years ago, when the huge ice caps had not yet melted and the sea level was 100 meters lower, the East Pacific Rise formed a chain of narrow islands with steep banks. For decades, academic science has not been able to answer the questions of how giant moai were built on a remote island, whose population did not exceed 4000 people even in the heyday, how the statues were transported from a quarry located at a distance of 6.5 kilometers, how they were installed ?
There are 887 stone moai statues on the island, their height is from 4 to 20 meters, some stand on stone pedestals ahu, the largest are immersed in sedimentary rocks on the slope of the Rano Raraku volcano. The largest weight, 21.6 meters high, is about 160 tons. In addition, some moai are "crowned with caps" of several tons each. Moai had "eyes" of white coral and red volcanic slag, their gaze was directed to the sky, perhaps that is why the island was once called Mata-Ki-Te-Rani - "Eyes looking to the sky."
