Rybakov B. Ya. in the book "Paganism of Ancient Rus" he mentions an ancient tract - Dedoslavl:

At the same time, we recently published an article - "Are cities - are they churches?", Which quoted the words of A. Hilferding from his work "History of the Slavs: The Ancient Period of the History of the Slavs" (1868):

Both information are very well compared with each other, because Dedoslavl, judging by the archaeological excavations, was not a residential settlement, but served as a place of public meetings, which in Greek were called "ἐκκλησία", which in Russian translation became "church".

At the same time, everyone knows that churches were usually built on heights, and many of them were erected on the sites of ancient "temples".

By the way, the word "temple" just means a certain collection ("to save, gathering").

And in this way we reveal all the same function as in the first churches and cities - a place of public gathering, a place of veche. But for some reason, historians prefer to focus only on "worship of the gods."

In the case of "Dedoslavl", the name of the temple or "city" very well reflects the attitude of the ancients to the veche itself: it is held in the presence of deceased ancestors (count, under oath)
