The ancient city of Petra, carved into the rocks, located on the territory of modern Jordan, it turns out, has not yet told all its secrets to archaeologists. The material, published in the Bulletin of the American Schools of Oriental Research, tells about the recent discovery of scientists - a stone platform buried in the sand, discovered in the area of the city of Petra.
The platform, which measures 56 by 49 meters, is visible even on satellite images of the area. Inside the structure there is another platform, on one side of which there were once columns, and on the other, a giant staircase is guessed.
An analysis of the ceramic items found near the ancient structure indicates that it is more than two thousand years old. Archaeologists have not yet been able to determine the connection between the discovered monument and the rest of the structures of the ancient city, known for the rooms skillfully carved right in the sheer cliffs.
Large-scale excavations at the site of the find will be carried out in the future, but a specific date has not yet been announced. Scientists note that first you need to analyze a number of other finds that can shed light on the purpose of the monumental object.
