The tunnel, discovered at a depth of 10 m under the pyramid of the moon, which is located in the ancient city of Teotihuacan, may have been dug to simulate the afterlife.

Archaeologists excavating at Teotihuacan claim to have found evidence of a secret tunnel under the pyramid of the moon. It stretches to the central square, which supposedly served as a place for human sacrifice and other rituals, reports The Daily Mail.

The National Institute of Anthropology and History of Mexico notes that computed tomography was used to locate the tunnel. Preliminary images have shown the length of the tunnel towards the center of the ancient city, but additional scanning needs to be done to validate the theory of "simulating" the underworld.

The heyday of Teotihuacan fell on the period between 250-600 AD. e., when more than 200,000 people lived in the city. By the time the Aztecs appeared on this territory, around the XIV century, the locals left the city. Archaeologists still have not found any remains of the Teotihuacan elite, who ruled before the arrival of the Aztecs. The reason for the decline of the ancient state is also unknown.
