Jeffrey Long, MD, is a radiation oncologist with 30 years of experience. The scientist is engaged in radiation therapy of malignant tumors. Long's patients know that their mortal lives are coming to an end.
The doctor himself did not experience near-death experiences (NDEs). Long first learned about the NDE from a close friend and began collecting experiences from people who had experienced it.

On the website www.nderf.org since 1998, the doctor has collected more than 3000 reports of near-death experiences. Based on the findings, Long wrote the book Proof of Life After Death.
As a leading researcher of the NDE phenomenon, Jeffrey Long has appeared at the New York Academy of Sciences, on major American television channels including NBC, ABC and National Geographic.

“At first I saw a brilliant white light, without reflections or glare. Then a feeling of … quiet glee, peace and incredible serenity enveloped me.
The experience cannot be compared with ecstasy or some other feeling familiar to me, except, perhaps, glory in the warmest and positive sense of the word. The sensation is different from what I experienced on May 5, 1960, when I served in the Air Force, and to the officer pilots at Lackland Base, the oxygen supply at high altitude was reduced after hyperventilation.
I felt peace and serenity. Heard nothing, felt nothing, did not feel pain and physical existence. I “felt” that I was talking with God, and I am being told important facts about the nature of our existence, which I must not forget and must pass on to others because of their incredible significance …
For some reason I was told that it was not my time yet, and I had to return. Something “more” awaits me, which I have not done before.
Then I began to hear very loud and unpleasant sounds like tearing of paper and then the voices of men and women. Then someone said, "It's time to have lunch," another voice said, "He suffered a respiratory attack." I still did not feel pain and did not see anything (the white light disappeared).
One way or another, after stopping breathing and NDE, I woke up with a firm conviction that there is a God, a gentle, forgiving God and the same God for all mankind … I already knew that I had a respiratory attack, but did not yet know why and when it happened …
A little later, I was told that I was walking with a nurse down the hallway after a successful laminectomy, and suddenly fell to the floor, unable to breathe. Fortunately, there was a neurosurgeon in the next room …
After the white light experience, I have studied hundreds of reports of near-death experiences … It is clear from the medical literature that many people have had experiences very similar to mine, and these experiences seem to cross religious, social and cultural barriers …
Many people seem to come out of the NDE with more faith in God, but perhaps less in the official religion …
Since my recovery, I have returned to psychiatric practice and now, in my work with patients, I ask questions about any unusual experiences they experienced during an accident or a surgical procedure.
