Historians and anthropologists around the world have been struggling for a couple of tens of centuries (starting with Ancient Greece) to unravel some of the mysteries of human origins. With each new find of historians, these mysteries do not diminish, on the contrary, everything becomes even more confused. Not so long ago, one of the popular periodicals conducted a survey among readers, asking them to choose the most interesting and mysterious archaeological monuments or finds. We invite our readers to familiarize themselves with the results of the survey.

7. The seventh place belongs to Egypt - in particular, the pyramids and, of course, the Sphinx. It is believed that the Sphinx is the oldest element of the Giza plateau - it is, according to rough estimates, at least four and a half thousand years old. Until now, historians are struggling with the mystery of the creation of the Sphinx - the most interesting thing is that archaeologists are interested in the pyramids even a little less than this colossus.

Scientists are breaking spears in disputes over the possible origin of the Sphinx - some argue that it was built along with the pyramids, others believe that it is much older than the pyramids. Most likely, at first it was a lion, and not only a body, but also a "face", which then the Egyptians transformed into the face of one of the pharaohs.

Few people know that a recent analysis of the Sphinx rocks showed that there are traces of water erosion on its sides, that is, it is quite possible that this "sculpture" was created long before the onset of the dry period in Egypt. More and more archaeologists agree with the point of view that the Sphinx is about 11 thousand years old! Bouval and Graham Hancock, archaeological scholars, believe that the Great Pyramid, which only a few millennia later was used by the Egyptians to bury their pharaoh there, has about the same number.

If the Sphinx and one of the pyramids are really that old, a logical question arises - who created them? And most importantly, why?

6. The mysterious "drawings" in the Nazca desert were discovered not so long ago, and immediately after they were surrounded, a large number of scientists became interested in them. Still - on a plateau 37 kilometers long and 1 kilometer wide, it was unclear who carved huge figures that are visible only from the air, and from a considerable height. All lines are exceptionally even, and it is still unclear how and for what purpose they were carved.

5. Atlantis

Despite the fact that the problem of Atlantis is only in fifth place in the poll, it is probably the most popular riddle, to the description of which, with subsequent explanations, thousands and thousands of tons of paper have been translated. Everyone has probably heard about Atlantis, so we will not dwell on this issue in detail. I would like, of course, to find out where it is, if such a state ever existed, but so far scientists cannot say anything definite.

4. Mayan calendar

The Mayan calendar has been deciphered, and the main mystery lies in the fact that the calendar is designed for thousands of years, but the "validity" of the calendar ends on December 21, 2012. What does this mean? War, cataclysm, alien invasion? Or is there a new era after that date? Unclear. Well, there is very little left to wait.

3. Mummy from the "Cave of the Spirits"

In 1940, a pair of archaeological scientists, Sydney and Georgia Wheeler, found the mummy in the "Ghost Cave." It is about thirteen miles East of Fallon, Nevada. Unfortunately, not the whole body was mummified, but only the head and right shoulder, but this was quite enough to recreate the appearance of this person. By the way, at the same time the remains were dated to 500 BC. However, in 1994, another examination was carried out, and it turned out that the mummies were not two thousand years old, but more than 9 thousand!

By the way, the alleged appearance was restored, but they could not determine the belonging of this person to this or that race. Scientists only realized that ancient man had much in common with the current inhabitants of the Caucasus. However, besides this, it can also be called a relative of one of the ethnic groups in Japan.

In short, the situation can be described as follows: "it is clear that nothing is clear."

2. A sunken city in Cuban waters

In May 2001, an interesting discovery was made by a group of researchers in the coastal waters of Cuba. Scientists have found the ruins of a sunken city at a depth of 1400 meters. In 2003, a deep-sea submarine specially built for such an occasion plunged into the abyss so that scientists could see with their own eyes what was hitherto hidden under the water column. In general, what scientists saw was clearly man-made. Some believe that the found ruins could well be the center of an ancient city. However, most are inclined to think that it is too early to say that IT IS.

1. Ruins in the coastal waters of Japan

And again a similar mystery - on the southern coast of the island of Okinawa, at a depth of 6 to 30 meters, lie another ruin, even more mysterious than the Cuban ruins. They were discovered by accident - and the discovery was made by an ordinary diver with no special archaeological training. He informed the scientists about the find, and now all the archaeological brotherhood is trying to decide what it is and who built it. It is clear that if this is really a sunken city, then the city is truly gigantic.
