Ghost or otherworldly presence
And although ghosts can live in various houses, and modern buildings are no exception, they still often prefer ancient buildings with long gloomy corridors and narrow dark staircases. There are houses in which ghosts live for years, decades, and even centuries. It just so happened that most of the buildings of this kind are in England, and this country can rightfully be considered a "reserve of ghosts." Still, Britain is no exception, just a well-studied rule.
• In the 1st century, the first documented description of ghosts appeared in Rome. It was made by Pliny the Younger, who was noted for his thoroughness and accuracy of descriptions of what he saw and heard. In one of his letters, Pliny spoke in detail about the ghost that the philosopher Athenodorus met in Athens. The philosopher was looking for a cheaper place for himself and, while walking around Athens, he came across a suitable house, on which there was an advertisement for rent. After talking with the owner, the philosopher was surprised at the low wages and hastened to move in … On the very first night, Athenodorus heard the clatter of chains. Raising his head from the table at which he was working, the philosopher saw the ghost of an old man with an emaciated face, a long beard, with chained hands and feet with a rusty chain … And the next day the neighbors told Athenodorus that this house had a bad reputation; everyone attracted by the cheap renton the very first night they met with a ghost and left the creepy place without looking back.
• Edinburgh Castle (in the center of the Scottish capital - Edinburgh), leading its history from the XIII-XIV centuries, is one of the world leaders in the number of oddities. During its rich and blood-soaked history, the castle has been "overgrown" with numerous legends and ghosts. In the huge gloomy dungeon of the castle, you can meet the ghost of the bagpiper, who was sent to explore the underground passage in search of a way out during his lifetime, but he never returned. What happened to him in the dungeon is unknown. And the headless ghost of the drummer, who was executed in the castle many centuries ago, is sometimes seen in the courtyard, as a rule, in the morning. From the dungeons of the castle, where for many years more than one thousand prisoners of war were executed and died from torment and hunger, strange sounds are often heard, at times you can see translucent flying objects. Bringing the poor fellow who tried to escape from the dungeonbut by an absurd accident of something thrown from a high cliff, the sentries see it on the slopes of the Castle Hill.
• 1765, Britain - the Rickits couple with three children and their own servants settled in one of the "haunted" houses. Almost immediately after moving in, residents began to hear at night a strange slamming of doors, knocking, creaking floors. And soon the frightened servants told the Rikitsam about the appearance of a tall woman in a dark dress, who almost every night descending the stairs leading to the kitchen.
• A certain lieutenant N. described his experience of communicating with the other world in 1991 in Stepanakert (Nagorno-Karabakh): “The white figure of a person moved very strangely - it smoothly moved its legs, making steps, and at the same time floated through the air, while her feet did not touch the ground. I could not restrain myself and started firing from a machine gun. I fired until the clip ran out - at least one bullet should have hit the target, but the white figure did not even accelerate its pace."
• In the twentieth century in Beijing, the most famous "haunted house" in the city was the building of the former British military hospital, which now houses a medical school. Most often, ghosts can be seen in those places where the morgue or operating room was previously located. A school graduate who accidentally came here said that he saw a white human figure against the background of the door, which immediately melted into air as soon as he lifted a brick from the floor.
• 1986 - in the Australian city of Klagenfurt, a group of tourists from France decided to take a picture near the town hall on the square. Two married couples stood next to a beautiful architectural creation, and their friend snapped the camera a couple of times. After the photos were printed, tourists saw clear images of themselves against the background of the walls, which were restored in the middle of the 17th century. The photos would be of excellent quality, if not for a small bright spot behind the head of one of the men. After a closer examination of this defect, they were able to distinguish human features in a foggy cloud. A long nose, eyes and curly long hair were clearly visible. Under the magnifying glass, we saw other small details of the face. One got the impression that this is the appearance of a noble and respected elderly man. We found out in speedthat the building of the town hall in this city for a long time belonged to the princes of the Rosenberg.

In 1918, it passed into full possession of the city authorities. At the beginning of the 20th century, an elderly manager served in the building, who decided to spend the last years of his life in Klagenfurt, as he considered this place one of the most beautiful in Europe. Under him, a change of owners of the building happened, which, apparently, did not make the old man happy. Perhaps the transfer process itself had a strong influence on him, perhaps he believed that the city authorities would not be able to properly monitor the perfect structure in all respects … The manager died a year after the town hall became the property of the city. But even in the last days of his life, he came to her, stood for a long time in the square and admired the beautiful structure. As you can see, even after death, the person remained faithful to his addictions and now he does not leave his favorite place around the clock.
• No ghost, probably, can match him in popularity. The Flying Dutchman is a legendary sailing ship - a ghost that cannot land on the shore and is doomed to wander the seas forever. As a rule, people observe a ghost ship from afar, sometimes it appears surrounded by a glowing halo. Legend has it that when the Flying Dutchman meets another ship, his crew tries to send messages to the shore to people who have long been dead. According to maritime beliefs, meeting the Flying Dutchman is considered a bad omen. It is based on a Dutch legend about a captain who, in a violent storm, vowed to go around the cape that lay on his way at all costs, even if it took him forever to do this. The devil heard him and punished him for his pride:this sailor was doomed to sail the seas forever and nowhere and never land.
Ghost stories
• In the 1880s, the English ambassador to Paris, Lord Dufferin, was visiting a friend's country house in Ireland. One night, he suddenly woke up. The lord stood up and looked out the window. In the meadow in the moonlight, he saw a mysterious figure hunched over under a heavy load that resembled a coffin. Dufferin went downstairs and shouted: "What have you got here?" The stranger looked out from under his burden, the lord saw an ugly, wrinkled face. When Lord Dufferin asked where he got the coffin, a figure passed through and disappeared. The next day, he told the owner about what had happened, but he could not explain this mysterious phenomenon in any way.
Some time later, Lord Dufferin was in Paris for an international diplomatic reception at the Grand Hotel. When Dufferin and his private secretary approached the elevator, the lord suddenly stopped and refused to go inside. The lifter was none other than that shriveled, ugly little man whom the lord saw carrying a coffin on his friend's Irish estate. The elevator began to climb without Lord Dufferin and his secretary, and they went to inquire about the identity of the mysterious elevator. When the elevator was at the 5th floor, the rope broke. The cabin with a deafening roar fell to the bottom of the mine, and all the people in it were killed.
This incident was widely reported in the press and studied by the British Physical Science Society. The Lord was never able to find out the identity of his savior. Moreover, neither the hotel staff, nor the people who tried to explain the incident, could not say anything about this person - neither his name, nor his origin.
In addition to the evidence collected by enthusiastic researchers, entries in old chronicles and newspaper notes, there are ghosts in photographs. Although most often people who fervently believe in ghosts and other manifestations of the Subtle World can certainly believe in what is depicted.
• 2000 - in Madrid was a huge success exhibition of the photographer Francisco Escor, who for 10 years took pictures on ultrasensitive film in cemeteries. The experts were unanimous; editing was simply ruled out here. The photo shows human outlines, as if woven from smoke. In particular, a strong impression was made by the picture where a man, whose facial features are quite clearly distinguishable, looks at his own grave. Senor Escor says he took up the job after filming the funeral of a close friend. Then, in one of the pictures, two silhouettes clearly appeared. In one, Francisco recognized the mother of a buried friend, who had died several years before her son, and in the other, his deceased brother, who had died in an accident.
• From June 1786, the elderly Prussian king Frederick the Great began to get sick - old age took its toll. But the king's spirit remained as cheerful as before. Laughing at medicine and doctors, the monarch with great difficulty yielded to the insistent requests of his relatives, who advised him to give himself up to the care of doctors. But instead of a prude nurse, he was helped by an old hussar, one of his associates under Rosbach. In fact, the old man, like a faithful dog, looked into the eyes of the king dear to him, not a step away from him and warning all his whims.
1786, August 3 - one of the internal sentries saw a "white lady" in the palace and informed the hussar about it, who scolded him, but still considered it his duty to tell the king about it.
“Nonsense,” said the patient. “Don't repeat the rubbish. It was some kind of camera-medhen who was going on a date with a page or a lackey, or perhaps the soldier simply dreamed about it while he was awake.
The next day, on the evening of the fourth of August, the king dozed off in an armchair, the hussar sat next to him and suddenly saw a white figure near the fireplace. Not daring to disturb the sovereign, he stared at the "white lady."
- See? the king asked in a hoarse voice.
- Whom, sir?
- White woman by the fireplace.
- I see, my king.
“It seems that women’s tales about ghosts tell the truth,” the king continued, calmly peering. “Let her go to hell where she came from.

“Maybe, but I don’t know them,” Frederick chuckled. He dozed again, the vision melting into thin air. A few days later the king died, and his last words were: "Thanks be to God, the mountain is past." What did he mean? No one knows…
