In this episode, the Pharisees bring a woman who has committed treason to the temple. According to the interpretation of the Old Testament, the sinner must be stoned. Wanting to catch Jesus in conflict with existing laws, they ask the prophet what they should do. To which he replies with a famous phrase. "Let the one who is without sin take the first stone and throw it at her." After not one of the Pharisees picks up a stone, he dismisses the woman with the words "go and sin no more."
A beautiful story that, as scientists have found out, turned out to be a medieval fake. The problems began when the linguistic analysis of the episode showed that it was written in a completely different language, using words that are not found anywhere else in the Gospel of John. Examination of the earliest existing handwritten copies of the New Testament has confirmed the initial suspicion - none of the earliest sources for this episode.
Finally, theologians managed to find several Gospels of the early Middle Ages, where this story began to occur. But in one case the episode was inserted in chapter 21 of the Gospel of John, and in the second it was part of the Gospel of Luke. All this indicated that the story was invented by one of the scribes who copied the Holy Book, and then, after the adoption of the canon, the parable officially became part of the Gospel of John.
Bart Ehrman, a Christian theologian who studies early Christian documents, believes that the story of the sinner was one of the most popular myths about Jesus, passed down orally for centuries. Someone from overly zealous Christians decided that it should be part of the New Testament, and therefore wrote it into the Gospel at their own request, or at the direction of one of the hierarchs of the church. So it has come down to our days. For sure, no one is without sin.
