Among the shamans of Yakutia there were quite a few great sorcerers who performed incredible miracles. However, what is interesting: even the most powerful and proud of them at all times admitted that they could not compete with the Tungus (Evenk) craftsmen who lived in the southern regions of Yakutia.

It is not surprising that Yakut shamans were afraid to meddle in the possessions of their southern neighbors: an average Tungus sorcerer could easily destroy the great Yakut sorcerer, and a small Evenk shaman could have sent an average “colleague” from the north to the forefathers. The division of territory among the Yakut and Tungus shamans was very strict, and according to an unwritten law, both sides were forbidden to invade the lands of their neighbors with their magic.

Eagle and owl

In these parts, the legend about one great Yakut shaman, who was distinguished by exorbitant pride and impudence, is very popular. One morning he did not wake up, and the sorcerer's family realized that he fell into a lethargic sleep. The shaman spent about three years in bed, after which he suddenly woke up and expressed great relief at his awakening. For a long time, his relatives tried to find out what had happened to him, and the sorcerer, finally surrendering, told the household an amazing story.

According to the shaman, three years ago he became bored, so he moved into his so-called. mother's beast, namely the eagle, and went to see the world. Carried away and finding himself inadvertently somewhere in the south, he suddenly noticed an owl of unprecedented size flying towards him. The owl grabbed the eagle with its claws, like some kind of mouse, and carried it to his nest, where he leaned on his victim with his whole body and did not let go for three years, and even constantly shit on it. It took a long time before the eagle seized the moment when his captor was distracted by something, and escaped.

The giant owl, as it turned out, was one of the mother animals of the unknown Tunguska shaman. That is, the Yakut sorcerers had only one such "avatar" each, and the incomparably stronger Tungus shamans could, if desired, have a huge variety of them.

Human flesh soup

Here is another fairly well-known story about the meeting of a Yakut sorcerer with a Tungus one.

Once an average Yakut shaman went to the southern regions. He was not going to conjure there, and a simple visit to "foreign territory" was not forbidden for the shaman. So, as such stories often begin, it was a frosty snowy winter. Our hero rode on a cart, which rolled behind a bull harnessed to it, and carried with him several sacks of first-class beef. On the way, the shaman was caught by a blizzard, and he decided to wait out the bad weather at someone's place. In the nearest clearing there was just an old booth in which poor people obviously lived, and the traveler went straight there.

Having entered the hut without knocking, he found an old man and an old woman in it. After announcing to the elderly couple that he was a strong shaman, the intruder demanded dinner and bed. The owners began to fuss, cooked a meager meal - and the shaman, having dined with a disdainful air, went to bed. In the morning, he also shamelessly had breakfast and, without thanking the owners, without even saying goodbye to them, set off on his further journey.

The sorcerer drove all day, and by evening he suspected something was wrong: the places around were too much like those where he had been the day before. Suddenly, a familiar clearing with an old booth appeared ahead. The worried shaman decided to ask the spirits who patronized him for help and find out from them what the hell was going on. However, the spirits remained indifferent to his questions.

There was nothing to do - the sorcerer went into the booth again and gloomily informed the owners that he had been repairing his broken cart nearby all day, so he would again deign to spend the night here. The old men fed the guest, made a bed for him, and the shaman, tormented by anxious thoughts, somehow went to sleep. At dawn he ate and left the hospitable hut in silence.

The day was very stormy, the road was covered with snow, and the bull dragged the cart with great difficulty. Already in the dark in front of the traveler, the windows of the hut lit up in the clearing - you yourself understand what …

Now the dumbfounded sorcerer realized that he had fallen into the trap of a more powerful "colleague." But who wants to punish him and for what offense? The shaman still did not sense the presence of another sorcerer nearby. Bursting into the booth for the third time, he did not even come up with an excuse - he just sat down at the table and demanded dinner. The hostess, with a sigh, announced that they had nothing left, and expressed the hope that the frequent visitor himself would treat the old people with something. That, of course, had a whole cart of beef, but the shaman did not want to share food with the rabble.

“It is not good for us to leave our dear guest hungry,” the old man said to his wife. "We'll have to cook our meat."

The surprised shaman saw how the hostess took out an ax and handed it to her husband. The old man sat down on the floor, bared his leg, and then he struck with all his might with an ax on the thigh!.. Blood gushed out in a stream, and the guest almost screamed at the sight of the protruding bone. And the owner of the house, know yourself, sits and calmly chops off his own leg. Having finished this terrible occupation, he got up, and the old woman wrapped a cloth around her husband's stump. After that, the cripple jumped to the table and began to busily butcher his leg, and having butchered, asked his wife to cook soup.

At this point, the guest realized the cause of his misfortunes and fell to his knees in front of the one-legged host, begging him for mercy. The old man was only silent and listened to his outpouring. Meanwhile the soup was ready, and the host gestured to the guest to sit down at the table. The dish turned out to be quite tasty, although the guilty shaman thought only about his fate and therefore ate without appetite. Then all three went to bed. Naturally, the guest had no time for sleep. All night he could not close his eyes, but he did not try to run away either - he knew that a stronger sorcerer, whose family he had insulted all these days, would not let him go home just like that.

In the morning the owner had both legs intact, as if there hadn't been any bloody scene the day before. He told the guest to get out and leave the bull and the cart with all its contents as a ransom. The traveler cordially thanked the shaman for the mercy shown and hastened to retreat. As he passed the wagon, he noticed that one of the beef sacks had been untied. So this is where the old men got the meat for the soup!..

For many hours the sorcerer of Yakutia walked through the snowdrifts until he got to the house where a large family lived. With its members, he already behaved with the utmost courtesy. It was there that the traveler was told that not far from this place lived a highly respected Tungus shaman with his wife …
