A secret tunnel and a cave have been found under the ancient pyramid of Mexico. Archaeologists have suggested that the Toltecs (a people who lived in Mesoamerica in the Middle Ages) built them for contacts with representatives of the "underworld". The discovery was made during the exploration of the Pyramid of the Moon, the second largest after the Pyramid of the Sun. It was probably built in the 3rd century AD, according to the Daily Mail. The building is part of the archaeological complex Teotihuacan (translated as "city of the gods"), located 50 kilometers from Mexico City. Note that the real name of this large settlement is unknown. The indigenous people left it in the middle of the 7th century. The new name was given to the ruins by the Aztecs, who came there much later.
The hidden cavities under the pyramid were discovered by scanning. Most likely, they had ritual significance. Something similar can be found in many settlements of Mesoamerica - for example, the Maya Indians built huge "portals" to the underworld and sacrificed them. The cavity under the Pyramid of the Moon is eight meters below the foot of the pyramid, its diameter is about 15 meters. The tunnel is located south of the central Plaza de la Luna. Perhaps there is another branch - to the east.
The Pyramid of the Moon was built between 200 and 450 AD. Its height is 42 meters (at the Pyramid of the Sun - 64). The pyramid staircase completes the Road of the Dead; at the top there is a platform for performing ritual ceremonies. Earlier it was reported that thanks to the radar, it was possible to find the lost Mayan city. The researchers scanned the area covered with dense forest, and found that ruins of stone buildings are hidden under the vegetation.
