On the Green Continent he is called "yovi" or "yovi-uovi", which means "hairy man". Indeed, almost everything in the history of this giant is mysterious: from the first meeting of Europeans with the "indigenous inhabitant of Australia" to the latest theories about its origin.
Meeting of two worlds
Few people know that the first English colony, founded near modern-day Sydney in 1788, had every chance of not existing - neither in those days, nor years later. So great was the fear of the British pioneers of the "indigenous people" of Australia, who were the first to meet European guests in Sydney Bay.
These indigenous inhabitants turned out, according to the logbook of the flagship of the First Fleet, hairy creatures over three meters in height, who took extremely unfriendly attempts by the shy sailors to offer them the first "fruits of civilization" - the notorious glass beads. I was judged by an entry in the logbook, the first Briton was abducted by the "Australians", the rest fled, since they did not go ashore from the boat.
If two days after the events described, the sailors, the students of the legendary James Cook, did not come into contact with the real aborigines, who told that, by chance, the overseas guests were first met by the Yovi tribe - "hairy people", the colonization of these lands would hardly have taken place would.
The sailors wanted one thing: to quickly get out of the places where "evil spirits" are found. Oddly enough, the Australian-born explanations about the danger posed by "hairy people" to ordinary people reassured her Majesty's subjects: these thugs were ready to fight anyone, but not the "sons of the devil", as they called the mysterious creatures.

This cannot be, because it can never be
Warnings to Australians about the dangers of yovi were not in vain. What happened in Sydney Bay a year after the first contact with the mysterious giants and the abduction of the messenger of Europe by them is amazing - not so much by the scale of the disaster as by its unusual consequences.
A group of British Marines and new settlers hunted in the local forests, shot a wallaby kangaroo and were already planning to leave home with their prey, but were suddenly attacked by several giants. The captain of the infantry, who sent the corresponding dispatch of the incident to London, considered that the Yovies were outraged by the murder of the wallaby, whom they considered a sacred animal. In the course of an unexpected battle, three military men were torn apart by the aggressors, who recaptured the corpse of a kangaroo from the outsiders and hid in the thicket with lightning speed.
And now - about the unexpected consequences of the bloody incident. The aforementioned dispatch reached London … only in 1820. The aged captain of the marines, who had finally returned to his homeland in order to while away the rest of his days in military retirement, unexpectedly found out that … he was deprived of both rank and content. For "a false report and the spread of panicky rumors about dangerous creatures, reliably recognized as fictional."
This formulation deserves an explanation. And it's very curious. The fact is that one of the First Fleet team reached his home country much earlier than the unfortunate captain and made a meeting with the famous scientist John Pinkerton in London. Mr. Pinkerton, according to the results of many days of interviews with the sailor, devoted to Yovi one of the chapters of his extensive monograph "Description of empires, kingdoms, states and colonies with oceans, seas and islands in all parts of the world" (1804). The fact that Pinkerton brought Jovi as real creatures - to quote - "with a flat nose, wide nostrils, thick eyebrows, deep eye sockets" caused a wave of indignation in the British scientific community at the beginning of the 19th century. The doctor was subjected to obstruction, his monograph was recognized as an "unsubstantiated apocryphal", and Yovi - "wild speculation."Therefore, the later belated report of the captain was considered a fake about the creatures, "authentically recognized as fictional."
For a second, let us ask ourselves the following question: why, in the end, is it necessary to trust the stories of a certain sailor and warriors, and not the scientific community, which had a reputation in those years as one of the most impartial and advanced in the world? Of course, we were not eyewitnesses of the events described above in order to assert that they all took place in reality. But as for the British scientific community of those years, there is another fact connected with the same Australia.
Remarkable pundits who got the usual Australian platypus at their disposal in about the same years, and he was considered … a fake! True, without understanding who, how and for what purpose “artificially brought out” this “monster”.

The past century, no less than the 18th and 19th centuries, is rich in meetings of people with a mysterious "hairy man", which, however, it would be more correct to call a "hairy giant". The only difference is that technical means have already appeared - the same compact movie camera, which allows recording such "dates".
The most mysterious of all the photographs that capture the mysterious inhabitant of Australia is now recognized as a photo taken in 1936 by Rich Jones, who worked in a hard-to-reach logging camp in the mountains of New South Wales (about 450 kilometers southwest of Sydney).
Taking a closer look, you can see in the left corner of the photo a huge creature sitting on a felled tree trunk in almost the same position as the two lumberjacks in the foreground. A play of light and shadow? May be. But already in 2011, the photograph taken by Jones was subjected to scrutiny at the New York Institute of Photography. The conclusion of experts: there is no retouching in the photograph, it was not subjected to later processing with the help of computer programs, the mentioned object in the left corner “is material”.
Is the truth somewhere … in the sky?
If we look for information about the Australian "hairy man" in publicly available sources, we will read that we are talking about "creatures common in the legends and history of the Australian Aboriginal tribes", "mythological cryptids" and so on.
Characteristically, such sources of information have not been updated practically since the 1960s, and therefore, describing this phenomenon as “without any evidence,” there is no information about the discoveries made by Australian cryptozoologist Rex Gilroy in the mid-1970s. Not to mention the completely new discoveries made by this ascetic and enthusiastic.
Interesting, meanwhile, not so much even the huge collection of facts collected by Gilroy and proving that Yovi continue to live in the neighborhood with the natives of the Green Continent, as, firstly, pearls of such, not disputed by the scientific community. One of these pearls is the casts of Yovi's footprints, made by Rex himself.
Secondly, an interesting theory about the origin of mysterious giants, put forward by an Australian. In his opinion, we will quote, "Yovies are not a dead-end branch of evolutionary development, but, most likely, represent the creation of some highly developed civilization that conducted a corresponding experiment before creating a higher quality" product "- the indigenous population of Australia."
Evidence for this version? According to the press, Gilroy promises to present them to the scientific community next year. Apparently, we will talk about an unusual DNA extracted from the saliva of an unknown creature, massively hunting domestic animals in the vicinity of Sydney.
Interestingly, Gilroy's revolutionary hypothesis correlates with many Aboriginal legends about the creation of humans by "star aliens." In particular, one of them - the legend of the heavenly bunyips - talks about how the "winged gods" first created giant creatures, and then the low inhabitants of Australia: so that the latter would "better live under the bright sun and more convenient to hunt."
