Let most of the stories with mysterious disappearances be a bona fide delusion or just a joke. However, versions about parallel worlds are supported not only by cases of “disappearances”, but also facts of no less mysterious “appearances”.
In the magazines of the early 20th century, there was a report that a man who had lost his memory was detained by the Parisian police. A map of the planet was found in his pocket - but it was not our Earth!

The detective story, which is kept in the archives of the city of Marseille, also makes one think about the existence of chronic failures. 1951 - Young Belgian Bernadette Laurel was there on vacation. Once she wandered into a small park in which large centuries-old trees grew and sat down on a bench to rest. Suddenly she saw a small church, although she could have sworn that she had not been here 15 minutes ago.
Surprised by her absent-mindedness, the girl went straight to the church, crossed the alley, stepped over the curb … and found herself in a small cemetery.
The contrast was stunning: just around there were park paths sprinkled with sand, trimmed lawns, neat curbs, and suddenly - rickety crosses overgrown with weeds. In the middle of the cemetery there was a small church, from which one could hear prayers for the dead in Latin. The frightened girl wanted to turn back. At this time, a funeral procession began to leave the door. Four men, dressed in coarse linen shirts and some kind of baggy trousers, carried a coffin, followed by a crying young woman with several children. All were dressed in some kind of pathetic rags, which she had never seen anywhere before.
Terrified, Bernadette ran back. After a couple of minutes, regaining consciousness, she looked around - no church, no abandoned cemetery!
The next day, she turned to the city archives. As it turned out, before the French Revolution, it was in this place that the poor were buried. Later, the cemetery was abandoned, and at the end of the last century, a park was laid out here.
Bernadette told the press about all of them. Professor Bergier, a student of Camille Flammarion, who devoted many years to researching various mysterious events, drew attention to the article. Bergier wrote to Paul Deschamp, an assistant in the Department of Neurology and Psychiatry at the University of Marseille, asking him to investigate himself.
"Experiments" on the spot did not produce anything; it was no longer possible to open the "door" in the 18th century.
Deschamp decided to pursue research in a different direction. He thought this: if the "window into the past" opens periodically, then it is very possible for people to enter our time from that time … The researcher began to continue his search in a psychiatric hospital. And immediately came across a mysterious case …
A certain Jacques Traves was arrested for stealing bread. In appearance he was 40-50 years old, physically well developed, but with obvious signs of exhaustion. He claimed that he was born in 1741 in a suburban village, was left without parents early, worked as a loader in the port, was married, but had no children. Once he had a drink with a friend and suddenly found himself "in the next world" …
In conversations with Deschamps, Jacques described in detail the realities of life in the 18th century.
The archives and church books of those times were seriously damaged during the French Revolution, so it was not possible to find information about the birth of Traves and 5 more patients of the mental hospital who claimed that they came to our time from the past.
The records were dated from 1765 to 1790. Events spiraled out of control and the medical department had to join the investigation. As it turned out, all four of the remaining patients had no signs of smallpox vaccination. There was practically no immunity to tuberculosis and to several other infections.
These data were classified by order of the Minister of Health. Deschamps was warned: if he does not stop "exciting the public with irresponsible statements", he will be brought to trial, and also deprived of his medical diploma!
The research had to be stopped. "Aliens from the past" who were transferred to another insane asylum (with a more strict regime) soon died of tuberculosis!..
But the story did not end there. Two curious students from Lyons, who came to Marseille two months later, again discovered the "gate of time." One morning they moved away from where Bernadette was sitting (the bench had already been removed). One of them walked through the alley, took a few steps … and disappeared.
