A group of international scientists from the Scan Pyramids project has announced the discovery of two previously unknown voids in the Cheops pyramid. A number of archaeologists have already expressed doubts about the significance of the new find.
The first results of the Scan Pyramids project, launched in October 2015, caused a real stir in the media. The report on the discovery of two anomalies in the largest of the Egyptian pyramids quickly spread through the headlines of many publications. However, the scientific community is not so optimistic, new voids may turn out to be just defects in masonry, and not hiding places in the tomb of the pharaoh.
The voids were discovered by a group of experts as a result of muon tomography ("clearances"). One of them is located above the entrance gate in the northern part of the building, the second is in the northeastern part. According to one version, these "rooms" can be linked to each other.
Through the Scan Pyramids project, scientists hope to discover rooms inside the pyramids of Cheops and Khafre in Giza, as well as the Broken and Pink Pyramids in Dahshur.
At the moment, the scan results have been sent to the laboratory for further studies. Researchers hope to use computer modeling to determine the nature of the anomalies, their size and purpose.
