Video: Why don't birds get electrocuted on power lines? 2024, November

The birds sitting on the wires resemble notes and create a very picturesque picture that always attracts attention.

Some people wonder why the birds sitting on the wires don't get electrocuted. But, this is a cruel wording in relation to the singing creatures. In my opinion, it is more correct to ask - is it safe for birds on electric wires.

Everyone knows that an electric current flows through wires, an electric voltage acts in electrical networks. According to the classification of power transmission lines, there are overhead and cable power lines. Overhead lines are laid with a bare metal wire, while cable lines are metal wires in a dielectric insulating sheath. And birds almost always choose aerial power lines as their roost.

The bird does not need to worry about safety (if it can do it). If a bird sits on one wire, then the line voltage between the points of support - that is, between its legs - is very insignificant and practically safe for it. Even a person sitting on an electric wire is practically not in danger. It's another matter if a bird accidentally touches a nearby wire. Then it will be under the influence of the phase voltage, which can be 110 Volts or higher (depending on the electrical characteristics of the transmission line). In this case, a significant electric current will pass through the bird's body, which, most likely, will instantly kill it.

Why do birds never use cable lines for their get-togethers? After all, cable lines are safe in principle. Nothing threatens the sitting bird on them. However, birds always choose a dangerous bare metal wire and comfortably settle on it without experiencing any problems. Obviously, this is due to the configuration of overhead transmission lines. The wire of such lines is always located horizontally above the ground, which is very convenient for a bird sitting on it.
