The woman who gave birth to the lizard was accused of witchcraft and almost lynched by the locals. The investigation was launched after a midwife giving birth to Debi Nubatonis saw a lizard instead of a baby.
Debi Nubatonis gave birth at the age of 31, after eight months of pregnancy, and now the Indonesian authorities have sent a commission to the scene to establish the causes and clarify all the circumstances of the strange incident.
Scientists included in the commission say that a woman cannot give birth to a lizard, but doctors at a local hospital claim that this really happened and now we need to find out everything and come up with a logical explanation for what happened.
The abnormal birth occurred in May in the remote village of Oenunto, where a midwife claims she went to give birth to a local woman who did not have time to get to the hospital and ended up giving birth, but not a baby, but a pangolin.
Accusations of witchcraft against the woman in labor led to threats against the woman and her family from local residents. To reassure the public, the chief physician of Kupang City, Dr. Messe Ataupa, told residents that a team of specialists had been sent to investigate.
Although it has been a long time, they still have not submitted their final report. According to members of the commission, they are "exploring some possibilities."
Dr. Ataupa assures: “It is absolutely clear that it is nonsense to suggest that a woman gave birth to a lizard. The birth of fetuses from different species is impossible."

“We talked with local residents who confirmed that the woman showed all the signs of pregnancy. Everything indicated that she really bears the fruit, as both residents and her family members are talking about. Maybe it was a “false pregnancy”, and she put the lizard inside herself, or maybe she fell during agricultural work and accidentally got a lizard inside her, but she herself did not suspect about it and thought that a child was moving inside her belly”, - trying to explain what happened Dr. Ataupa.
Be that as it may, but the midwife who delivered the birth assures that the patient lost water and had contractions, only then the midwife almost lost her mind when a tail appeared from the woman in labor and a lizard was born.
Midwife Josephine Lydia Hellen filed a report and continues to claim that the woman to whom she gave birth was not a child, but a lizard.
