An interesting discovery was made by European scientists Klaus Birkhofer and Martin Niffler. According to them, theoretically, spiders are able to eat all people living on Earth within one year.
The biologists published the results of their research in one of the specialized publications. They estimate that in one year the world population of spiders consumes about 400-800 million tons of food. And the total weight of all seven billion people living on our planet reaches only 357 million tons. In other words, as biologists note, spiders are able to eat all of humanity in one year and will still be hungry.
Scientists base their assumptions on certain indicators, in particular, the average amount of food consumed by arthropods of various sizes, and the number of spiders per square meter in different regions of the planet that are suitable for their habitation. So, for example, according to biologists' statistics, there are on average 131 spiders per square meter in the world.
Most spiders feed on insects, but at the same time, larger species are able to eat birds, lizards and small mammals.
