Amsterdam-based engineer Arkaitz Garro created a small facial recognition device that he attached to the balcony door. The system allows you to let a cat named Bobis in from the street, without making the pet wait in the cold. Business Insider reports.
To create the gadget, Garro used a Raspberry Pi mini-computer with a camera and software, as well as image and motion sensors.
Instead of installing a pet door, Garro came up with another idea: “I wanted to make a device that would allow Bobis not to wait at the door, but to be able to quickly find himself in the room.”
According to the man, Bobis is a neighbor's cat, but he always liked to visit the Garro family.
“My wife and I first saw this cat on the balcony several years ago, and we didn't know if he had a house or if he was a stray. To begin with, we became friends with him and he began to visit us often. Later we learned that the cat has an owner who lived in several houses in the neighborhood. He admitted that he was very happy to “share” the pet with us, and also developed a schedule according to which Bobis comes to our house at a certain time,”said Garro.

When Bobis once again wants to visit the Garro family, the device works according to the following principle: first, the pet is “greeted” by a Raspberry Pi mini-computer with a camera. The gadget detects movement in the yard of the house using a sensor, takes a photo and sends it to the cloud-based AWS Rekognition image recognition platform.
In addition, the system has been trained on hundreds of pictures of cats and can reliably determine whether it is a Bobis or not. If the device recognizes the cat, then it sends a notification to Garro in Slack to open the door. The man admitted that he spent several hours of work and $ 50 on creating the technology.
