Beijing Capital International Airport is one of the largest airports in the world, consistently ranked among the ten busiest air harbors in the world. Wishing to improve the quality and speed of service, as well as safety, the airport contracted with Baidu to install special equipment with artificial intelligence technology to organize passenger screening and boarding.

The representative of the international communications department of Baidu Yan Shuang told RIA Novosti that at this stage, technologies are being tested on airport employees, but in the near future it is planned to start the full functioning of the new system.

“This is not a one-day project at all, we entered into a strategic partnership with Beijing International Airport on August 23rd and began testing our facial recognition devices at their flight control center. We decided to take a consistent approach. At this stage, the devices are applicable only to employees of the center when they come to work and leave the center,”said Yan Shuang.

According to her, the company will soon expand the use of this technology, and it will already be used to recognize passengers during control.

In addition to the facial recognition program, Baidu plans to robotic helpdesk, which will provide information on the location at the airport, flight schedules and other data necessary for passengers.

The company does not intend to limit itself to working only with the Beijing airport, "by the end of this year we plan to start cooperation with other airports in the country, at the moment, the process of discussing the application of our technologies in a number of air harbors in China is underway."

Yan Shuang spoke about the direct work that artificial intelligence will perform.

“When a passenger goes through security control, our system takes a picture of him and saves the picture in the database, and later it will be used in recognizing the passenger's face during boarding the flight,” she said.

At the same time, the interlocutor of the agency said that in order to increase the level of security, the image will be saved in the airport database and can be compared with the images of the same person from other official databases.

“When boarding a plane, passengers will no longer need a boarding pass or identity card, when access is allowed, our facial recognition system will automatically identify passengers and provide them with the necessary access,” said Yan Shuang.

Baidu assures that there is no need to fear errors in the work of artificial intelligence, since technologies allow verification with almost one hundred percent accuracy, which is impossible for a person to achieve.

“Baidu's facial recognition technology has achieved greater accuracy than humans can achieve. The devices installed at the airport will be assigned a very high limit of the accuracy of identification, so the possibility of errors is practically reduced to zero,”said a company representative.

She stressed that "more than 99% of passengers should not have any problems passing the check, but if someone does not pass the system, he or she will undergo an additional check, in which it will be necessary to present an identity card."

The company believes that the use of these technologies will significantly improve the convenience of airports, as well as their safety.

Baidu was founded in 2000. Provides various web services, including the Baidu search engine. In 2005, the company held an IPO on the NASDAQ exchange. Recently, the company has been actively developing in the field of artificial intelligence technology.
