A mystical incident helped to find the site of a major medieval battle in Mordovia

This story seems like real mysticism, but it happened in reality. The dream of 7-year-old Alyosha from a remote Mordovian village unexpectedly materialized into a unique archaeological find that sheds light on one of the main inter-clan battles of Ancient Russia.

Sleep in hand

It was last winter. A local historian, archaeologist and researcher of the history of the Mordovians, Sergei Devyataykin, received a call from an acquaintance, a resident of one of the villages of the Insar district of Mordovia, and told about a mysterious incident that excited all the locals. One morning, the parents of 7-year-old rural boy Alyosha noticed a fresh scar on his collarbone. It did not resemble an ordinary household scratch, but looked like a wound from a wound. The boy was under the supervision of his parents almost all the time and could not get such an injury. To all questions he answered: "You do not know anything, I saw knights, there was a battle, and an arrow hit me …"

Sergei Devyataykin, extremely interested in the story, went to the village, talked to the boy, and according to the descriptions of the boy, it turned out that in a dream he saw a place popularly known as Paidla's Turema - in Russian, the Battle Mountain. Plainly, however, none of the locals could explain where this name came from. But suddenly it all came together one to one.

Dmitry Madurov, a senior researcher at the Chuvash State Institute of the Humanities, Candidate of Art Criticism, considers the find unique, since, according to him, it can be a material confirmation of the Russian-Mordovian confrontation for the possession of a fortified settlement at the mouth of the Oka. At least in historical sources, negotiations on this matter between the Mordovian ruler Abramka (Obran) and a certain Russian prince are described. In response to the demands of the Russian prince to surrender the city and further payment of tribute, the Mordovian ruler allegedly replied that he was an elected person, and such important decisions as surrender to the enemy of the city were made publicly. Veiled denial and provoked the battle.

- If the finds really belong to the XI-XIII centuries, then during this period the battle of the Mordovian soldiers could only be with the Russians, Dmitry Madurov is convinced. - On the territory of the present Insar region were the lands of the Volga Bulgaria, inhabited by the Mordovian people of Moksha. From the west, the lands were in direct contact with the possessions of the Ryazan, Murom and Vladimir-Suzdal principalities. Taking advantage of the fact that the main forces of the Mordovian army at that time were diverted to the battle with the Tatar-Mongols, the Russian princes often made predatory raids on the Mordovian territories.

There is another version of the events that took place on the Battle Mountain. It is presented by the historian Sergei Svyatkin, who suggested that it could have been a battle between the North and South Mordovian tribes. That is, such a small-town disassembly. The historian believes that by the beginning of the XIII century, the unification process within the Mordovian tribes led to the fact that they, in fact, had two rulers - the foreigners. The names of the two largest foreigners are documented in chronicles. The northern, Erzya, tribes were united under the rule of Purgas, and the southern, Moksha, under the rule of Puresh. The northerners were in a military-political alliance with the Volga Bulgaria, and the southerners were in vassal dependence with the Grand Duke of Vladimir and had military contacts with the Polovtsy. This led to clashes between the northern and southern clans, one of which could have taken place on a mountain in the Insar region.

Wound phenomenon

The riddle of the Battle Mountain is almost solved. But another mystery remains: how did the boy see a battle a thousand years ago, about which he could not know anything? His parents did not know about the battle, and therefore they could not pass on knowledge to the child, frightening him with a terrible story for the night. Of course, one can imagine that the child's wild imagination was somehow embodied in a dream. But how to explain the scar from the wound on the boy Alyosha? In principle, completely inexplicable cases of the appearance of traces of combat wounds in children are known. The nature of their origin is still not understood and is unlikely to ever be discovered. They are like encrypted messages from ancestors who wished their descendants to know about their feat.
