Scientists are building various hypotheses for the appearance of giant craters in Yamal and Taimyr. One of the versions speaks of a natural gas explosion.

The first crater was discovered by reindeer herders in Yamal in the summer of 2014. It was a funnel with a diameter of about 80 meters. Then they found two more similar craters in Taimyr and in the Tazovsky region.

Recently, a satellite observation system has discovered 4 more craters, one of which is surrounded by 20 smaller craters. But the craters that were found two years ago have already disappeared, and lakes have formed in their place. Scientists are confident that in addition to the seven known craters, there may be others.

The origin of the giant craters has not yet been established, but this mysterious phenomenon requires study, because it contains a danger to people. The main version is based on an explosion of natural gas that breaks through the permafrost. If this version is correct, then other funnels should appear. The reason could be an increase in temperature as a result of human activity. Local residents in the area of the craters observed gas outbreaks.

But there are also supporters of another, not too scientific hypothesis, involving the intervention of alien forces. It is based on the fact that the funnels look very smooth inside and cannot be the result of an explosion.
