Scientists from Australia have explained the purpose of the ancient Celtic concentric circles in Scotland. A related study was published in the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports and is briefly reported by the University of Adelaide.

Concentric circles of massive stones were created in the late Neolithic (about five thousand years ago) in accordance with the solar and lunar cycles. The surrounding landscape was taken into account. Most of such astronomical and religious monuments in the British Isles, as the authors note, were built according to a single template.

In the study, archaeologists used statistical techniques to process data describing the position of the Callanish stone circles and Stennes megaliths in Scotland, which appeared 500 years before Stonehenge. These designs made it possible to accurately track the rising and setting of celestial bodies at certain times, for example, when the Earth's satellite is in the northernmost position on the horizon, which for these territories occurs once every 18.6 years.

In August, British archaeologists came to the conclusion that the underground structures discovered three kilometers from Stonehenge are not structures made of stone, but building foundations made of rubble, intended for the construction of wooden pillars.
