The fact that some evil spirits are found in the Medvezhye Lakes near Moscow was said 30 years ago. A resident of the village of Maltsevo Fyodor Kuzmich Karaukhov recalls:
“We sat with the men at sunset, catching fish. Seryoga Nemukhin just started to tell something about the Loch Ness monster, and we all laughed, they say, maybe we have the same thing? Suddenly, right in front of us, five meters away, a wave rises and a huge black driftwood crashes against the water!
Five minutes later she appeared again, already further away, and swam like this for about ten meters. Very fast, like a motor boat. It was evident that she was alive and shining all over. We then discussed for a long time what it was. Clearly not a fish. It looks like something like a seal. But where can seals come from in Bears?"
Later, the "water miracle" was allegedly seen by other local residents.
There are two bear lakes - large and small, located 2.5 kilometers from the Shchelkovskoye highway. The photo below is Small Bear Lake. It is connected by a channel with Lake Bolshoye Medvezhye.
Maria Timofeevna Lyubavina was the luckiest one. She, the interlocutors recall, and closely examined it: a long tongue in a huge toothless mouth, small gimbal eyes … According to her, the "beast" loved to climb into the reeds and chew them.
Some argue that the elderly woman even fed the local "Nessie" with dry bread … But Maria Timofeevna died, she had no relatives, and I failed to clarify the strange history of domestication of the "lake miracle".

Old-timers remember that scientists-paleontologists came here more than once, measured something, dived with scuba diving.
In those years, publications began to appear that Conan Doyle's "The Lost World" may not be such a fantasy. Lizard-like creatures, wrote the American zoologist Dr. Monar, could somehow survive in the wilds of dense forests (especially in Africa) and at the bottom of secluded lakes of predominantly glacial origin. (Bearish, by the way, is just that.)
In the case of the Scottish Loch Ness, the speech, judging by the descriptions of eyewitnesses, was about plesiosaurs of the Alasmogaria family. It has always been believed that the ancient lizards became extinct 70 million years ago. But after one of the long-lost cross-finned fish was caught off the coast of Southeast Africa, scientists realized how wrong they were.
Meeting with these brave looking "mastodons" caused a tremendous shock in the scientific world. How is this possible? Indeed, in order for the species to survive, at least 20 healthy individuals are needed! If the same Loch Ness had swarmed with so many giant underwater creatures, lovers of exotic would have long ago discovered their habitats, corpses or skeletons. Where does it all go?
In the end, the opinions of the researchers were divided. Some argue that the whole point is in the deep undercurrents of Loch Ness: they say, its waters tend to draw in and "hide" everything that the current brings. By the way, this is why the lake never throws up the bodies of people drowned in it.
Other scientists said that the remains of rare animals are hidden by the muddy soil of the lake, embalming the corpses, like Egyptian clay. One way or another, none of the scuba divers who tried their luck managed to catch Nessie by the tail.
But in the end, in our country, everyone got used to the idea that somewhere in the African jungle or in the north of Scotland there can be miracles. But no one believed that the beast-lashers could stick their heads out in the nearby suburbs.
When suddenly a black "snag", according to the descriptions (if they, of course, believe them) very reminiscent of the same Scottish plesiosaur, appeared right under the noses of domestic eyewitnesses! Most surprisingly, the structure of the lake, its siltiness and origin practically coincided with Loch Ness. Here, too, there are rough underwater currents, because of which unwary swimmers died.
There is even a long-standing legend about the "second day" of the lake - researchers explain this phenomenon by the streams of karst waters that can pierce entire underwater caves and lakes. In theory, under the usual, visible reservoir there may be several underwater ones. It is there, in unknown depths, that anomalies unknown to scientists are probably hidden.
Employees of the Paleontological Institute then, however, did not find any traces of ancient animals. The pictures of the local Nessie, taken by lovers of exoticism, were all indistinct and vague as if they were on the selection (for the sake of fairness, I must say that the Loch Ness monster never "worked out" properly). The fact of strange disturbances on the lake (in geology, such processes are called seiches) remained without any explanation.
Olga Vladimirovna Buinova, candidate of biological sciences, is now retired and lives in Shchelkovo near Moscow, then she participated in research. She told how, at the first attempt to dive to a very shallow depth, it became clear that the lake "from the inside" was too muddy, while outside, it seemed, literally every pebble was visible!
The scientist had the impression of an unsolved riddle about that expedition:
“We then officially informed the Academy of Sciences that no unusual phenomena in the lakes had yet been found, but this place requires serious research. However, the expedition was quickly turned off and the maps of the area were for some reason withdrawn …"
For the locals, it seems, to this day it is absolutely clear: in the depths of the lake there is a kind of stormy life. Some people associate the phenomenon with the ancient pagan cult of the bear. Since ancient times, ritual celebrations in honor of this sacred beast have been celebrated on the shores of the lake.
Sacrifices were made to him. There is a legend about how a certain fisherman disobeyed the order of the elders of his tribe and decided to marry a foreign beauty. Such offenses were punished very severely. They tied the young man to a log, cut off his arms and legs and slowly immersed him in the waters of the lake …
His unfortunate bride cursed all the "bear" family living on the shore of the lake, and since then, they say, a "black beast" has settled in the lake, which frightens everyone with its unusual appearance. Many, however, argue that the "dragon", on the contrary, protects the surrounding villages from all sorts of misfortunes.
“Even now we sometimes see a giant fish, which shows us a black back and swims away very quickly, each time bringing a big wave,” the fishermen said. “Although our lake itself is very calm, these creatures now and then create small storms here. At such hours we do not go out on the boat either …"
