To speak a foreign language, and even more than one, without making the slightest effort is a very tempting prospect.

But it is not given to everyone and so rarely that the ability to suddenly master a dead or never learned language - called xenoglossia - is on the same level of mysticism as telepathy or telekinesis. That is, it is considered fiction and is not supported by the scientific community.

The first evidence that can be attributed to xenoglossy is found in the New Testament - the moment when the apostles spoke in other languages. Then a similar case occurs in the chronicle of the XII century, when one of the monks of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra began to broadcast in languages previously unknown to him. Since he was not particularly religious, other monks decided that demons had taken possession of him, and began to diligently drive them out.

The same situation happened with the Italian peasant in the 19th century - after the "exorcism" he died. In 1634, some novices of one of the London monasteries began to speak as many as three languages - Latin, Spanish and Greek. They were treated without cruelty - they were forced to fast and pray continuously.

Since the 20th century, scientists have become interested in the phenomenon of xenoglossy. After research, they deduced a pattern - in most cases, the ability to speak in other languages wakes up after receiving a brain or mental injury. For example, in 1978, after being struck by lightning, a man spoke three European languages. In 1979, a pensioner was hit by a car, after which he discovered that he knew German. In 1998, a woman who survived a stroke was monitored at the Institute of Psychiatry, who spoke Hebrew after him.

Then it was discovered that some people immersed in deep hypnosis are also able to speak in previously unknown languages. For example, a hypnotized English girl said in ancient Egyptian that she is a dancer at the temple. The Egyptologist who was present during the conversation could not catch her in a lie. In 1955, an American woman hypnotized herself as a Swedish man who died in the 17th century. Her speech contained archaisms inherent in that time. In 1959, a resident of Canada, also in a state of hypnosis, said that he lived in the Middle East. He wrote several symbols, upon further study, turned out to be ancient Arabic writings from about the 7th century.

These cases fit into two theories, neither of which has evidence. The first of them claims that a person's genetic memory awakens - he can speak the language of his ancestor, regardless of how distant he is. The second hypothesis is about reincarnation, when a person speaks the language that he spoke in a past life.

There are other, less popular hypotheses. According to one of them, people are able to unconsciously connect to the information field, and leave it with “out of tune”, speaking in the wrong language that was originally. Well, another version assumes that all this is the intrigues of aliens who are either studying humanity, or making fun of it.
