The Montgri Castle (Castell del Montgrí), located on the Santa Caterina mountain (Muntanya de Santa Caterina), is the symbol of the Torroella de Montgrí region.

The Castell del Montgrí fortress adorned the top of Mount Montgri at the end of the 13th century, in those distant times, King Jaime II of Aragon was greatly concerned that the Count of Ampurian Ponce V did not recognize royal power on his lands (the current districts of Baix Empordà and Alt Empordà province Girona). To observe the possible movements of Ponce V's troops, at the direction of the king, his military strategists found a place with an ideal view, where they began to build a fortress in 1294. As a rule, such structures are being built for a long time and then continuously improved over the centuries, the fortress of Mongri has an unusual fate in this regard: as soon as the developer figured out the walls, towers, moat and took up the interior, the obstinate Count of Ampuri yielded to the king, and work on the fortress slowed down, as it turned out, forever.

There is another version:

At the end of the 13th century, the surroundings of L'Estartit were constantly raided by pirates, and therefore the Aragonese king and count of Barcelona, Jaume II, issued a decree to build a defensive fortress. The fortress was built in the form of a regular square with four corner towers, the height of which reached 13 meters. Each tower had its own separate entrance to the fortress in the form of a gate. As the raids continued all the time, in 1397 Queen Juana I reconstructed and fortified the fortress.

In the middle of the 15th century, Montgri Castle fell into decay. Another reconstruction was carried out only at the end of the 20th century, in 1988, after which the Montgri Castle opened its doors to visitors.

If you climb the spiral staircase to the top of one of the towers, you will have a wonderful view of the surrounding area. Even the Medes Islands are visible from here.
