The Mexicans nicknamed this cactus "The Creeping Devil" - the plant actually behaves in such a way that it is just right to summon an exorcist. This unusual species, Stenocereus eruca, is capable of not only walking on the ground, but also cloning itself!
The creeping devil grows only in the northwest of the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. Unlike all other cacti, this one does not grow vertically, but horizontally. Slowly, only two to three centimeters per year, the cactus moves through the desert in order to find the most optimal conditions for growth.
The stem of the cactus is slightly raised above the ground. As it grows, this tip will become firmly entrenched in the new sandy soil, and the old "body" of the cactus will begin to die, eventually decaying into nutrients that help the new stem to exist.
In a sense, a creeping devil must first die in order to live on. Unfortunately, now Stenocereus eruca is on the brink of destruction. Its thorny stems grow parallel to the ground, which makes it difficult for cattle to graze - local farmers with amazing indifference destroy entire thickets of this amazing plant.
