Siberian geologists report that in about 20 million years, Eurasia - the largest continent on our planet - will be split in two. The split, according to the calculations of domestic scientists, will occur along the largest freshwater lake on the Earth, that is, along Lake Baikal. Employees of the Sobolev Institute of Geology and Mineralogy, as well as experts from Novosibirsk State University, are convinced that an ocean will appear in this place in the distant future.
Russian researchers have long been studying the history of Lake Baikal, tectonic processes taking place in it and the accumulation of sediments in the Baikal rift zone. This zone is a deep fault in the earth's crust, which is about 1500 kilometers long and stretches from the southwest to the northeast. Here, presumably, the divergence of the earth's crust takes place. The Baikal rift zone, according to scientists, is slowly but steadily expanding, and in about 20 million years this will lead to the fact that Eurasia will be split in two. Thus, we can conclude that if our country remains by that time within its present borders, then it, in turn, will be divided in two by a new ocean.
It should be noted that no one has previously studied the topic so seriously and made similar forecasts for the Baikal rift zone. In addition, now all this information has been translated into English and has become available to foreign scientists who, if they wish, can contribute to the study of this issue. Foreign experts are already saying that the loss of Baikal - the largest natural reservoir of fresh water - will be an irreparable loss for the Earth and humanity. If our civilization, of course, is still alive after so many centuries.
However, by that time, perhaps, more than one civilization will change on our planet, and the one that is destined to survive the process of division of Europe and Asia will not even guess that humanity foresaw this catastrophe 20 million years ago …
