Austria will re-create Stonehenge for an exhibition showcasing discoveries that only a few years ago were unknown outside the UK.
The monument, which is over 4 thousand years old, has been worrying scientists for several centuries, because the purpose and construction of this mysterious structure are still unknown. And now an exact reduced copy of this great monument will be recreated in the Mamuz Museum in Mistelbach, Lower Austria.
It is not known for certain how the stones of Stonehenge, weighing up to 50 tons, were collected throughout Britain and transported to Wiltshire, west of London. Scientists estimate that such an engineering task required hundreds of men and a complex system rope pulley.
In 2016, an Austrian researcher chose a more modern solution to this problem. He has completely recreated the Stonehenge Valley using 3D laser technology.
Visitors will have a unique opportunity to get to know this monument better and even touch its seven-meter stones - a unique experience that was strictly forbidden for visitors to the real Stonehenge due to fears that any touch could destroy the great monument.
The exhibition, which opens on March 20, will also provide information on discoveries made in Lower Austria, which archaeologists describe as the earliest versions of Stonehenge. These discoveries provide a clear idea of how the terrain changed from the Stone Age to the Bronze Age.
