The structure, called the Dyson sphere, is a giant rigid shell around a star and can, according to science fiction writers, be created by a technologically advanced civilization to solve the problem of living space.
In the fall of 2015, astronomers noticed a strange short-term decrease in the brightness of KIC 8462852 - the star became 20% fainter for about one day. This fact became the basis for the assumption that the star is surrounded by a Dyson sphere. This hypothesis was then picked up by numerous media and presented it as a sensational discovery of aliens.
A study by a group of scientists led by Michael Hippke, published in the Astrophysical Journal, shows that all the oddities in the behavior of KIC 8462852 can be easily explained by the fact that the comparison of its brightness in different periods of time was carried out incorrectly.
