"Sleeping sickness" continues to rage in the Kazakh village of Kalachi. From December 20 to the present day, forty people fell ill.
The holidays were also restless; several residents, including a Russian citizen, were admitted to the Esilskiy district hospital. The woman came to visit her relatives and also fell asleep.
In just two and a half years, 120 cases of encephalopathy of unknown etiology were registered, 98 people fell ill, some of them repeated. Dozens of commissions have visited the village, thousands of analyzes have been carried out, but there are no results yet. The reason for the sudden sleep is still unknown.
Saule Agymbaeva, deputy akim of the Esil region:
- Since March 2013, eight waves of the disease have passed in the village of Kalachi. The arrival of specialists from regional and republican doctors, in particular of motherhood and childhood, is planned, the mobile laboratory "Kazhydromet", headed by Bekturov, will visit, laboratory research will continue. Various lists of residents have been formed in case the issue of resettlement is considered, there are proposals from the districts for the provision of housing.
