35 kilometers from Los Angeles in the Pacific Ocean is the rocky islet of Santa Catalina (or simply Catalina), belonging to the Channel Islands group. Previously, the American Indians of the Tongwa tribe lived here, who called it Pimugna (Pimu).
The conquistadors incorporated the island into the Spanish Empire. Smugglers hid here and gold miners were looking for their happiness. For a long time it was the territory of Mexico, and from the 1840s it became part of the United States.
From 1919 to 1928, amateur archaeologist Ralph Glidden worked on the island. This extraordinary person was born in 1881 in Massachusetts. When Ralph was 15 years old, their family moved to live in Santa Catalina. Glidden worked as a carpenter, but was interested in Indian relics. He excavated over 800 graves in about a hundred different locations. He managed to find thousands of artifacts, as well as almost 4,000 human skeletons.
The publications of that time reproached the archaeologist with disrespect for the dead, but Glidden did not dig up graves only for the purpose of enrichment. The archaeologist was sure that in Catalina and the neighboring islands, in ancient times, there was a race of tall, fair-haired, blue-eyed Indians. After 10 years, he completed the excavation: evil tongues said that Glidden was bluffing, and the sponsors stopped funding the hopeless venture.
But there is another opinion: Glidden received meager pay for his work, but achieved his goal, having managed to prove his own theory. The largest male skeleton he found was 9 feet 2 inches (almost 2 m 80 cm) long. Remarkably, all ancient giants were six-fingered. (On this score, the British have an interesting hypothesis. For example, when they buy eggs, they consider them not dozens (which would be more logical, because a person has 10 fingers), but dozens. Several newspaper articles from 1959 contain information about another find - in the vicinity of Catalina, during excavations on the island of Santa Rosa, several 7-foot skeletons were found. On turtles with bulging foreheads, remnants of red hair have been preserved. Surprisingly, the teeth grew in 2 rows on each jaw. Mummies with the same teeth were found in a local cave in 1961. Analysis showed that these remains are at least 7 thousand years old. All of this was described in the five-volume edition of the Indigenous Races of Pacific North America.
