Astronomer Royal Lord Martin Rees assures that robots will wipe humanity from the face of the earth within several centuries.
The astrophysicist predicted that machines will take over in a few centuries, and their existence will last for billions of years. Their life will be longer than human, and the period of dominance of people on Earth will be only a small stage in the history of the planet.
In an interview with The Conversation, Distinguished Professor of Cosmology and Astrophysics Lord Rees said that over the next 10-20 years, technologies may appear with the help of which humans will search for alien life.
He noted that even if life outside of Earth exists, it is not necessarily "intelligent."
“In my opinion, if we manage to detect alien life, it will not look like a person. Rather, it will be an electronic system, says Rhys. "Looking at the history of mankind on Earth, we see that it took about 4 billion years to transform the simplest organisms into a modern, technology-equipped civilization."
"But if we talk about the future, it is likely that within a few centuries, machines will prevail, and this could last for billions of years."
"In other words, the period of predominance of 'living' intelligence is only a small layer between primitive life and the era of machines."
“Since these civilizations will develop at different rates, it is extremely unlikely that we will find intelligent life at a stage of development similar to ours. Most likely, this kind of life will be either very simple, or it will be a completely electronic mind,”said Rhys.
