Correspondents visited a division of the Investigative Committee of Russia (TFR), whose employees are implementing these non-traditional forms of investigation. As it turned out, not everyone adheres to materialistic views in law enforcement agencies.
Svetlana Proskuryakova, a blonde of about thirty in a black dress, covers the photograph with her hand. I printed it a minute ago and I know exactly what happened to the man imprinted on it. Svetlana will have to determine this with her own paranormal abilities. I thought she would start rolling her eyes, mumbling incantations and thrashing in ecstasy. But she just covered the sheet like a poker player hiding his cards.

In this scene, it would not be surprising if we were sitting in the salon of some sorcerer - with curtained windows, candles, incense … Nothing of the kind - bright light, office furniture, and a meter away from Svetlana - Sergei Zerin, an employee of the second forensic department accompanying the investigation of the technical and forensic department of the Main Department of Criminalistics of the TFR. We, in fact, are in this department.
To be honest, until now psychics in the service of investigators seemed to me just as ridiculous a sight as gypsies with coffee grounds in the Hydrometeorological Center. But for Sergei Zerin, there is nothing unusual in what is happening. On his monitor the slogan: “Everything is possible. The ideal principle of the superuniverse superstructure. And what Sergey Zerin and a number of other employees of the department are doing is called "the introduction of applied psychology into investigative practice." However, as it turned out, the help of clairvoyants in the TFR and in general in law enforcement agencies has been regularly resorted to for a long time.
“For the first time I took part in such work in the mid-90s,” says Sergei Zerin, “the case concerned the theft of 400 million rubles at Goznak. The suspect gave evidence, and behind him was a psychic who seemed to see what was going on in the mind's eye of the interrogated. For example, the latter says: "I open the trunk, take the pliers and go left." And from behind: "Wait a minute, you not only take the pliers … and go not to the left, but to the right." In general, the suspect quickly confessed everything. How can this be explained? Science is powerless so far. I myself treat this with a grain of healthy skepticism. But there are facts, there is practice, for us this is the main criterion.
Reports of the use of psychics in investigations have flashed repeatedly. But it always seemed that this event was out of the ordinary. When the case is especially loud and complex. Imagine my surprise when I learned that only Svetlana Proskuryakova helps in the investigation of 2 - 3 cases per week. Sergei Zerin takes out several folders from a drawer. Now I am reading: a request from the N investigation department of such and such an area. Circumstances of the case - the person disappeared then, was last seen there, photograph. And then there is a completely serious answer: there is a possibility that the wanted person is killed, and the body is in such and such a forest. “There was never any talk of making psychics full-time employees,” says Sergei Zerin. - We address them not as experts, but as specialist consultants. They do not receive money for this, their data is never presented to the court as evidence. But they can sometimes give a very accurate, albeit probabilistic, answer. After the explosion at Domodedovo, it was the psychic who first pointed out the demolitionist to the video from the surveillance camera. He looked and said: this person has an energy spot. Then experts confirmed it. But most often they turn to psychics if a person is missing. For example, in September last year in the Ryazan region a girl disappeared - a certain Maria Mishina. Her fiance did not find a place for himself, actively participated in the search, constantly fiddling with the police. The photo of Maria and other data was dropped to us. Two psychics independently said that she was killed. One said that the groom did it after intercourse. And Svetlana indicated the direction where to look for the body. The groom was paid close attention. It turned out that there were gaps in his testimony. The car he rented had a satellite tracking system. It was possible to raise the data, and it turned out that he was silent about one trip. And this was exactly the direction that Sveta determined. It was there that they found the body, cut into pieces. He sawed it with a jigsaw. In the Tambov region, they managed to uncover the faithful "wood grouse" - the murder of a school teacher. The investigators had no leads at all, and the psychics showed that the criminal was her former student, that he had a psychological dependence, that he was registered in a mental hospital, and so on. The killer was arrested two weeks later. He confessed everything, said that he had lost, came to the teacher, hit her on the head and took all the valuables he found in the house.

MIST IN EYES MEANS POISONING
Svetlana Proskuryakova faces death every day: in the world she is a pathologist. For 12 years she worked as a forensic expert, now she works in an ordinary city hospital. I encountered my own inhuman abilities in my student years: I saw a photo of an acquaintance and immediately realized that he was not alive. Indeed, a few days before he was hit by a car. Since then, he has been trying not to miss an opportunity to develop his abilities. According to her, if not superpowers, then everyone can develop intuition in themselves. Helping investigators for her is also an experiment that allows her to check the correctness of her feelings and the correctness of analytical conclusions.
- Several years ago, investigators from one of the police departments came to me, - says the psychic, - they were investigating the case of the missing woman. I do not know who advised them to contact me, but I saw that they were very skeptical. I said that the woman was most likely killed because of the apartment and that the body was hidden outside the city in a westerly direction. And then they found the body exactly where I said. And the policemen began to contact me more and more often.
Svetlana puts the photograph I proposed aside and asks to tell her the date of birth and the date of death - or disappearance - of the person depicted. She carefully enters these data into the program on the laptop.
- I always felt that there was a pattern between the date of birth, date of death and the cause of death of a person, - says Svetlana, - since I had a lot of material, I analyzed about 5 thousand cases. And it really did reveal a certain pattern. But the best results are given by the combination - this data and a photograph.
- How do you understand from the photo what happened? Is it some kind of voice or something else? I asked.
- Visual sensations come first, - says Svetlana. - Something subtle appears in the eyes of the deceased. And it depends on the cause of death. Sometimes I see some kind of fog - this is if a person drowned or got poisoned. Or the eyes, like some kind of tunnels, become especially deep. This is most likely strangulation. If there is a head injury, then some kind of distortion appears over the head. And when you hold your hand over the photograph, you feel warm or cold. And the images in my thoughts rush. The quality of the photo doesn't matter, even if it's a photocopy from your passport.
Svetlana again picked up the printed photograph and was silent for a few seconds.
“This is not a natural death,” she said. - The injuries are very serious, but not murder. Something to do with the very high temperature … I see metal … The countryside … And one more thing: at the time of his death, he was absolutely calm. I even experienced pleasant emotions.
I am amazed. The mind is frantically looking for an explanation. Spied on while I was printing? Or someone suggested? But besides me, there is no one … Or just made a series of logical conclusions? Be that as it may, the psychic Svetlana hit the very spot: the photo showed a person who died in a plane crash. Svetlana continued to talk about some cases, but I was not able to concentrate well. The skeptic, sparing no effort, tried to defend the previously conquered spaces. He evidently understood that a little bit more and he would have to recognize Baba Yaga and her flights in a mortar.
- It seems to me that our ancestors already knew all this, - seeing my confusion, Sergei Zerin enters into the conversation, - remember Russian folk tales? A good fellow leaves, leaves some thing and says: if it turns black, then something happened to me. All our things are connected with us, carry our energy. Traditional science is unable to explain such facts. But within the framework of quantum physics, this is confirmed. After all, there is a theory of inseparability, that is, inseparability. Through it, all connections are preserved. And if we proceed from the big bang theory, we can assume that everything is connected with everything. You just need to see these connections. You know, ordinary people do it too. There was a fire in the Primorsky Territory in winter. The whole building was flooded with water. Frost 30 degrees, the water froze. And the investigator has to work, look for evidence, you won't wait until spring. One employee concentrated and felt: it is necessary to hammer the ice in such and such a place. And what do you think: it was from there that the main evidence was extracted! And in another region, an employee who had nothing to do with psychics found a buried corpse. He just closed his eyes and tried to feel where he could be. So, I think it is worth introducing a special course for investigators - on the development of intuition.
MEMORY AS A VIDEO TAPE
We saw Svetlana Proskuryakova, but I still have questions for the forensic scientist. They dealt with the so-called activation of the memory of witnesses - under hypnosis, a person can recall details that are hidden in a normal state. This is also applied psychology.
“We remember everything we see,” says Sergei Zerin, “but we don't concentrate on all the details. In a hypnotic state, forgotten details can also be counted, and everything can be recreated almost to the point of smells. And then the memories can be played like a tape in a VCR. Whether you want it - slowly or quickly, you want it - you press the "pause" or rewind. In St. Petersburg there was a series of robberies on banks. It could not be solved in any way until they found a witness who saw the car of the criminals. He could only remember how quickly she left. But in a state of deep trance, he managed to remember a fragment of the number, which was enough to detain the criminals. In another case, a witness under hypnosis was able to recall a phone number that he saw only in passing in a friend's notebook.
According to Sergei Zerin, there are two types of memory activation. Easy form - cognitive interview. This is a routine interrogation, but the investigator is trying to conjure up in the person's imagination a picture of what happened in the smallest detail. The second form, the so-called hypnoreproduction, is deeper. With the written consent of the witness, the specialist introduces him into an altered state of consciousness, into a deep trance. This allows you to remember even glimpsed.
- What is this state of deep trance? I ask. - This is a dream? Does a person become a zombie, like in films about hypnotists? By the way, do you use excipients? After all, some people prefer to achieve a trance with the help of heroin or weed …
- No drugs, - the forensic expert shook his head, - on the contrary, we often have to restore the memory of those who, after alcohol or drugs, do not remember anything. A man wakes up, his wife is killed in the kitchen. And he has amnesia. Even so, the memory can be restored step by step. The trance state is not a dream. The person is awake, interacts with a specialist. But his consciousness is completely freed from the influence of the environment and extraneous thoughts. The tension is relieved, the witness is completely immersed in that time and in the situation that needs to be recreated.
According to Ivan Streltsov, Deputy Head of the Main Department of Criminalistics of the ICR, there are very few specialists who can put the interlocutor into a state of hypnosis and read detailed information about past events. Such employees are constantly on business trips - they activate the memory of witnesses and victims in different regions. Some of the specialists have more than 30 business trips a year.
“One of our main tasks is to use the capabilities of modern science, including applied psychology, in the investigation of crimes,” said Ivan Streltsov. - The method of hypnoreproduction of memory has been in the arsenal of the investigation for more than 3 years and has helped to solve dozens of crimes throughout the country. Specialists in this area are piece pieces. Therefore, we now see our task in creating a training system in the TFR that can provide training for professional psychologists both in the central office of the department and in territorial investigative bodies.
When Sergey Zerin accompanied me to the entrance, I asked:
- Can I or any other person put myself in a state that will help to remember something forgotten? For example, the lost phone of a girl …
- In a hypnotic state - it's unlikely, - answered the forensic scientist, - but you can try to relax and recreate the desired picture in your imagination. Context is very important. Smells, colors, sensations, what music sounded, what was heard outside the window. Then the phone number may come up. In general, anything is possible. This also applies to memory and paranormal abilities. Anyway, everything in the world.
Sergei Nikolaevich smiled slyly and took his leave. It felt like I had been through the looking glass. Psychics, hypnotists, memory activation and the Big Bang theory … For some reason, I remembered a line from a children's song: "With whom are wizards found, and with those who believe in them."

The terrorist attack on August 13, 2007, when an electric locomotive and 12 cars of the Nevsky Express went off the rails, was solved, among other things, by immersing one of the witnesses into a hypnotic state.
