Siberian scientists, without waiting for clinical trials, tested on themselves the drug being developed for the treatment of toxic cirrhosis of the liver, better known as the "pill for old age"; the developers assure that they received a positive result that met all expectations, said Andrey Bekarev, director of the developer of the drug Scientifiq Futures Management.

The new drug is a joint project of specialists from the Novosibirsk company and the Tomsk Research Institute of Pharmacology. According to Bekarev, the official clinical trials of the drug with the participation of volunteers should begin in November, and the drug will reach pharmacies in a few years.

Invented and healed

Andrei Bekarev prefers to call the drug G5, which the media dubbed "the pill for old age", as a drug of regenerative medicine, since its main property is to restore the body's recovery function. The drug increases the release of stem cells, which contribute to the restoration of organs and tissues. This property was discovered by scientists almost by accident.

“When we created the drug, it had a different goal, it was used in combination with cytokines (regulators of immune reactions), we had data that it is possible to significantly reduce the dosage of these drugs during treatment. When the principle of the drug's action was described, it became clear that it could have more effects, Bekarev said.

When scientists realized the level of safety of the drug, they began to use it on themselves, including one of the creators of G5, an employee of the Research Institute of Pharmacology in Tomsk, Gleb Zyuzkov.

“Another employee of the research institute had a rather serious illness, which traditionally has no methods of treatment, some adhesions, and he received a complete recovery. But a single result does not give anything, a static sample is needed,”said the director of the developer company.

Cirrhosis pill

According to the developers, preclinical tests of the drug on animals have shown that G5 can cure such a common and intractable disease as toxic cirrhosis of the liver. In mice that were injected with the drug, liver cells were completely restored.

“The drug has a broader effect, but one indication is chosen for registration, since if you declare ten indications, you will conduct tests for a hundred years,” Bekarev explained.

The interlocutor clarified that the choice of cirrhosis of the liver is associated with the possibility in this case to quickly release the medicine to the market. In November, the developers will finish preclinical trials, then they will send documents with the results of the research to the Ministry of Health, and only when the department issues a permit, scientists will begin to conduct clinical trials.

“According to the optimistic scenario, clinical trials will take from one and a half to two years, according to the real scenario, three to five years. Everything depends on the conditions presented by the Ministry of Health,”Bekarev said. According to him, the drug is likely to be produced in the form of tablets or capsules, its cost will depend on the volume of production. “We will try to make it inexpensive,” the developer promised.

Side effects

During preclinical trials of the drug, scientists discovered some "side effects" that could be the subject of future research.

“When conducting tests for embryonic toxicity, how the drug affects the course of pregnancy, we got an interesting result. Usually a high dose of the drug is given, already fertilized eggs are implanted in the mouse, then they see how many survived. Almost 100% of the planted eggs have developed and grown to adult mice,”said the agency's interlocutor.

The scientists decided that there was a mistake and repeated the experiment. The results were confirmed, and in the future, G5 is supposed to be investigated as a medicine for the restoration of reproductive functions.

Another scientific experiment of Siberians became a sensation, for the results of which the media called the medicine "a pill for old age." As Bekarev said, rodents of 12 months of age were divided into a control and an experimental group. The drug was dripped into the mouth of the experimental group.

“From the age of 18 months, there was a significant difference between the mice. More than 30% of the control group died of old age, all the mice showed signs of aging: baldness, arthrosis of the legs, weight loss, changes in blood biochemistry … mice,”he said.

The experiment was completed when the experimental group of mice lived for more than 21 months. Scientists decided to re-run the experiment, having already documented it not as a scientific experiment, but as an official study.

Despite the incredible results, Andrei Bekarev emphasizes that he is not going to launch exactly the “pill for old age” on the market, since testing a medicine on a person in this capacity can take a hundred years.

Moreover, according to the entrepreneur, there are many theories of aging. “Rather, the G5 can improve the quality of life rather than prolong it. Not only stem cells are responsible for aging,”Bekarev specified.
