Monks of the Vysoko-Petrovsky monastery drew water from it in the 14th century
Today in the capital you can taste the spring water from the holy source, which Muscovites worshiped 7 centuries ago. The oldest well was found by Moscow archaeologists in the courtyard of the Vysoko-Petrovsky monastery thanks to construction work that is taking place this year as part of the federal and city program for the restoration of churches - "Culture of Russia".
As soon as archaeologists clear the ancient well, water appeared in it. The abbot of the monastery, Abbot Peter (Eremeev), announced this on his Facebook page.
“The well, found earlier in the monastery, was a surprise. Archaeologists have discovered three well logs in one place, entering one into the other, like a nesting doll. This is the first find of its kind in Moscow. But that's not all! Water appeared in the well today. Deep down, we hoped for this, although we did not expect it, because the aquifers on Petrovsky Hill are definitely not the same as in the 15th or 16th century. Meanwhile, this place is marked on the old plans as the Holy Spring, already at the time when the Naryshkins lived here,”wrote Father Superior Peter.
The find is truly unique
“Earlier, ancient maps were discovered on which a well was marked,” Vladimir Berkovich, Deputy General Director of Archeological Research in Construction LLC, explained to Komsomolskaya Pravda. “But it took a long time to find it, as the territory of the monastery was rebuilt many times. It is surprising that the source was alive.

The Vysoko-Petrovsky Stavropegic Monastery of the Russian Orthodox Church in Moscow is one of the oldest in the capital. It was founded back in 1315 by Saint Peter, Metropolitan of Kiev, Vladimir and All Russia in Moscow. Known from written sources since 1317. The main part of the modern architectural complex of the monastery was built in the 17th-18th centuries. In 1918 it was closed by the Bolsheviks. The activities of the monastery have been resumed since 2009.
