Off the southern coast of Chile, about four dozen whales were thrown onto land, which were discovered by foreign researchers working in the area.
The reasons that prompted mammals to throw themselves out of the sea are unknown, although similar cases have occurred here and before, scientists cannot establish the motives that pushed whales to this act, writes RIA-Novosti.
Tentatively, the whales washed ashore two weeks ago, but the exact date cannot be established due to the local climate, according to the Chilean National Fisheries Service.
Interestingly, such behavior of whales is observed regularly in this region. In addition, in 2011, in the Chilean Atacama Desert, the remains of 75 whales were found that died about 2 million years ago - these animals, according to scientists, once threw themselves onto land just like their modern counterparts. Science has not yet been able to establish the reasons that push the whales to a suicidal rush to land.
