Athanasius Kircher is an outstanding and now almost forgotten scientist, Jesuit monk who lived in the 17th century. It is known that, among other things, he was engaged in archeology, traveled a lot, looking for rare ancient manuscripts and artifacts. He also founded a gallery of curiosities, which later grew into a huge museum, the Kirchenarium. In his museum, Kircher demonstrated pictures of the Universe, conducted various experiments and proved that Jesuit scientists discovered the true laws of nature, in which there is a lot of what we now consider mysticism and esotericism.
Kircher also argued that the complexity of the structure of the Universe is better expressed in the esoteric writings of antiquity than in the works of his contemporary scholars. However, Orthodox contemporaries won, and Kircher was happily forgotten.
But many of his mysterious drawings remained, in which he reflected his experiments, copied ancient manuscripts, sketched the views around him. And each of these drawings is simply amazing - we see various machines, mechanisms, mysterious structures, and we understand that the world was not at all what the history books tell us.
This is how the Kirchenarium looked like - a lithograph of 1792.
