According to The Verge, the main supplier of the US Army will be Lockheed Martin, which will supply the military with microwaves to combat drones. The system is designed for installation on aircraft (airplanes and helicopters) in order to turn off drones at a great distance with a beam of focused microwave radiation. It is worth noting that a year ago, the US Army adopted a similar SHIELD (High Energy Laser Demonstrator) system, but it did not become widespread, despite the fact that $ 26 million was spent on it. The amount of the current deal was not disclosed.
But why did the United States Army suddenly need microwave guns? The answer is simple enough: for security reasons. The fact is that the purchased guns will be used to destroy drones and drones. This decision is associated with the recent attempt on the life of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Recall that on August 4, during a performance, 2 drones (presumably Matrice 600 from DJI), with C4 explosives on board, flew up to the stage where the president was speaking. The assassination attempt was unsuccessful, but 7 people from the president's body were injured. So the decision to adopt the means to combat drones looks extremely reasonable.
