German psychologists have concluded that nearsighted people are smarter than those with near-perfect vision. These are the results of a study involving more than 3,500 people.
Scientists from the University of Mainz have linked human intelligence to vision for the first time. And although it is traditionally accepted that bespectacled people are smarter, this has never been seriously confirmed by science. Now researchers have recruited nearly 3,500 people with different eyesight to put them through intelligence tests.
It turned out that myopic people are more intelligent and educated than those who do not need glasses. However, experts have found a very clear link between IQ and the amount of time spent on education. This indirectly confirms the theory that education actually makes a person smarter.
The length of time spent on education was associated with the amount of time spent reading books, as well as the amount of time spent in front of a computer screen, which contributes to visual impairment and the appearance of myopia. In this particular way, education influences vision, and vision, in turn, affects the level of intelligence.
The researchers also managed to find out the level of myopia among the inhabitants of Europe. It turned out that in the group of professionals over 40 years old, it is almost 50%, that is, every second needs glasses. The study found a clear link between myopia and more advanced cognitive abilities in humans.
