Geophysicists have once again convinced themselves: the water that is on the surface is far from all that is on our planet. There are oceans deep underground too. The most recent evidence of this came from American researchers led by Steve Jacobsen of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.
In a diamond that was raised from the bowels of the planet to the surface by a volcanic eruption in Brazil, scientists discovered an inclusion - that is, foreign impurities that got into the mineral where it was formed. And it was formed, as it turned out, at a depth of about 1000 kilometers.
Through the microscope, the researchers saw the inclusion and identified it as a hydrated mineral brucite, containing hydroxyl ions that got into it along with water. This allowed us to conclude that where the diamond formed - that is, at a depth of about 1000 kilometers - there is a lot of water.

Earlier this diamond, also found in Brazil, was studied by scientists led by geochemist Graham Pearson of the University of Alberta in Edmonton. And the Canadians found inclusions, but not brucite, but ringwoodite formed in a humid environment. And they found water in the ringwood.

According to the existing view, ringwoodite is the main component of the so-called transitional zone of the Earth - the bowels located at depths of 500-650 kilometers. It was at this depth that Pearson placed the underground ocean. Jacobsen hid it deeper. But both agreed in their estimates: the water in ringwoodite and in brucite is about 1.5 percent. According to preliminary estimates, these very percentages and "pour out" in about 10, or even 20 Pacific oceans.

Several years ago, American researchers led by Michael Wysession, a professor of seismology at the University of Washington, St. Louis, talked about underground oceans. We “groped” them by studying seismograms - records of earthquake characteristics.
Comparing the data collected over many years in different regions of our planet, scientists have traced how the waves from the blows of the elements spread in the earth's crust and mantle.
The analysis of about 600 thousand seismograms shocked. It turned out that at least in two places - under the eastern part of the continent of Eurasia and under North America, there are huge reservoirs of water.
This was evidenced by the pattern of attenuation of longitudinal seismic waves, which is characteristic of water.
And even earlier, British scientists from the University of Manchester discovered sea water under the Earth's surface. Recognized its traces in the carbon dioxide escaping from a depth of about 1500 kilometers. They were not believed. But it looks like now it will have to.
It is not known exactly how the water got inside the Earth - it is possible that it was formed together with the planet. That is, she was always there. Or leaked from a surface that used to have much more water than it does now. Maybe the whole planet was one big ocean. As Europa is a satellite of Jupiter.
