According to VTsIOM (All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center), every fourth Russian is convinced that the Sun revolves around the Earth. The head of the research center Valery Fedorov shared about such disappointing statistics in an interview with Izvestia.
Fedorov noted that sociologists have been asking Russians this question for several years. At the same time, each time a significant part of the population demonstrates complete ignorance of the basic principles of the structure of the world and offers an “alternative view”.
“This is a sociological fact that we established, then rechecked and re-confirmed,” commented the head of the research center.
“According to the VTsIOM poll, a quarter of Russians believe that the Earth does not revolve around the Sun, but the Sun around the Earth,” he said.
Fedorov himself admits that he is amazed at the answer of part of the population of our country to this question, and says that other sociological data did not impress him so much.
It should be noted that in 2011, during the same survey, 32 percent of respondents said that a star in our solar system orbits the Earth. And in 2007 there were 28 percent of such bestolo … respondents.
